UTV plans world cinema channel, Olive TV

After wooing kids with Hungama, the teens with Bindaas, UTV is now out to woo the serious cinema buff with the launch of Olive TV, a world cinema channel.

As part of Olive TV, UTV brings together award winning cinema – likes of BAFTA, Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto – to the Indian audience. Depending on the response, they may look at theatrical releases in select Indian cities and corporate / film club screenings as well. DVD releases are also planned.

I think this is a great move by UTV. Everyone else is so busy wooing Bollywood that this niche is underserved. And there definitely exists a small (relative to Bollywood) but strong demand for such alternative cinema.
