Indian Railways goes mobile, top search query on Google India

Cleartrip goes mobile, TravelmartIndia goes mobile and now Indian Railways decides to go a step forward.
Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched IRCTCmobile, a graphical interactive interface for booking train tickets, for mobile phone users. However, for using this application, mobile users need to have Java-enabled handsets (to view graphics) and should be able to access the Internet. The application is based on a patented technology of Mr Sam Pitroda’s US-based firm C-SAM.

IRCTC already offers the option of ticket booking through mobile phones using instant voice response and text messages, but they are not based on graphical user interfaces.

Once users install the new application, they can check availability of tickets, book tickets using credit and cash cards, check fare and train details between two stations, check ticket details and view route.

‘Indian Railways’ was also the top search query on Google India.

1. Indian Railways

2. cricket

3. sania mirza

4. flowers

5. air deccan

6. aishwarya rai

7. indian airlines

8. cricinfo

9. india

10. airtel

See the rest of the list here. IRCTC is definitely taking the right technical initiatives. This doesnt necessarily translate to great execution though. Here’s Nirav Mehta’s account of his recent tryst with the IRCTC website.

  1. You can search about trains, availability, fare and all other features on a new site which is not developed by Indian Railways, but a third party, you may know the name, that is http://www.indiantrains.org/

Visit this site and experience the new ways to find the trains and their availability.
