Comparison of payment gateways in India

If you are an Indian startup and you have an e-commerce component to your application, you will need to review, evaluate and shortlist a payment gateway that can handle online payments via credit and debit cards.  And most likely this will not be an easy or fast process.  In its current form, there are just a handful of payment gateway service providers in India. Access to information related to a few them is non-existent on the web.

I’m hoping that this post will help folks to do an easy and quick comparison between the various service providers.

Before we move on to the comparison, let’s consider some of the criteria that are important while evaluating a payment gateway:

1) Cost:

All payment gateways have an intial setup cost and then charge a small percentage of the transaction. Few have an annual maintainence cost (AMC) as well. The initial setup cost is a one time charge only and is mostly non-refundable. The annual maintainence cost is an annually recurring charge. The transaction cost (TDR)  is charge per transaction and is generally anywhere between 4-7% of the transaction amount. The higher the volume, the more you can negotiate the transaction cost.

2) Support:

How helpful and responsive is the service provider when you run into a problem ? Do they provide off hours support ?

3) Chargeback policy and disputes:

What is the policy for chargebacks and refunds ? What is the policy for disputes ?

4) Ease of Integration:

Does the service provider provide an easy way to integrate the gateway into your app ? Do they provide alternate means for integration if tomorrow your architecture changes for some reason ?

Beyond these basic criteria, you’ll also need to consider additional factors (depending on your requirements) like – what credit cards / banks are supported by the payment gateway ? Do they provide mobile banking option ? What is their rate of successful transactions etc ?

One often raised point is why not use PayPal as your payment gateway ? After all, they provide a great API for integration, there are plenty of code samples already available and their rates are quite competitive.

Well, the reason why PayPal may not suit everyone’s requirements is because they do not provide you the option to charge customers in Indian Rupees. If using one of the PayPal supported currencies meets the requirements of your app, great. If not, you’ll need to consider using a payment gateway that will allow payments in Indian Rupees.

So, here’s a comparison of the major Indian online payment gateways (had to publish as a PDF since the spreadsheet wont fit on the blog).  The list includes a comparison of CCAvenue, DirecPay (operated by TimesMoney group), EBS (collaboration with Axis bank), ABC Payments (operated by IndiaMart), HDFC, ICICI Payseal and Transecute.

The troublesome part of it was trying to locate the correct pricing plans for the various payment gateways, especially for DirecPay, HDFC and ICICI. DirecPay, HDFC and ICICI for whatever stupid reason choose not to list their pricing plans on their websites. You need to contact them via email or snail mail (ICICI) with your business details and only then, based on the nature of your business, transaction volume etc. do they send you a pricing plan. Sheer incovenience — I mean, so much ground work to simply get info on their pricing plans ? Its been 3-4 days since I emailed DirecPay and HDFC for details about their plans and am yet to hear back from them.  I fail to see why they dont provide a simple price info on their website rather than to go through this archaic process.

The comparison document is by no means complete just due to the sheer difficulty in locating correct information on the web. I’m keeping this document ‘live’ – in the sense that if you have any input / update suggestions to add any additional payment gateway to the list or to update info related to any of the ones already listed in the document, please send them in to me and I will continue updating the document.

So which payment gateway should an Indian startup use ?

To begin with, you should obviously analyse the various payment gateways on some of the criteria that I listed above. On top of that, if you need to review data related to the success rate, average time to refund etc. for some of these gateways, I would suggest reviewing the statistics revealed by IRCTC – India’s biggest e-commerce site. They release monthly data related to transactions and payments, which includes how much each payment gateway contributed in terms of number of transactions, the amount contributed by each as well as the number of days to refund etc. For instance, only 53% of the transactions using the HDFC gateway completed successfully while ICICI gateway handled 17% of all the transactions that were done on the IRCTC website. The data also provides great insight into what are some of the main banks / debit cards being used by customers. For instance, 8.10% of all net banking transactions were attempted by ICICI customers while only 0.32% of all transactions were done by Bank of India customers.

Based on my research, if I were to use an Indian payment gateway today, I would personally go with either CCAvenue or EBS – for the simple reason that they make it very easy to get the needed information, have good online documentation and support wide range of credit/debit cards. In case of the other providers, its like a black hole – you try to seek out information and become a customer — and they try to make it that much harder to access that information.

If you have used / worked with and Indian payment gateway, I’d like to know how your experience has been ? If you were to recommend one to others, which one would it be ?

  1. Pranav,
we use both direcpay & ICICI payseal.

your numbers are a little way-off in terns of transaction charges. But that might me since you looked them up via the web Vs talking to these guys.

direcpay – is great for its netbanking options / debit cards. they even power google ad words.
ICICI/ any direct bank – generally offers you lower transaction charges – and also greater control on what appears on your customer’s credit card statements to reduce charge backs.

payseal/ hdfc are big strong players & do have their policy’s / norms which one must adhere to – as they are very strict on the merchants business / profile. So the approval process does take months.

few things to keep in mind :)

    • you can also check out with atom technologies for IVR ( Interactive Voice Response ) based payment solution, which enables you to accept the credit card, debit card and prepaid cards payments over the phone without any manual intervation.

Tata Sky, Sun TV, Dish TV, Indiatimes Travel, Akabar Travels are using their platform… for processing payments over the phone.

    • Sharad,

I agree — the prices can definitely be negotiated — the info i have gotten is all from the web.

if the approval process for icici / hdfc ends up taking months, it doesnt really suit startups pretty well — does it ? It would basically mean either pre-plan and apply ahead of time or wait till the approval comes around.

      -p

      • @Pranav
yes – its always helpful to pre-plan.

In our case we started up with Direcpay – quick n easy. While the application for ICICI was being processed.

        Sometimes a 3% transaction charge diff ( 3% — Vs 6% CC avenues ) – might make a sea difference

    • I have been recently discussing payment gateway solutions with http://www.development-india.com and they have assured me time after time that there are no transactional fees, annual fees – it is a one time set-up cost and that is all.

I was interested to know how this works, and is there a catch which I am not seeing??

      Thank you

    • Hi Sharad,

      You are true,
ICICI /HDFC are big strong players & do have their policy’s / norms which one must adhere to – as they are very strict on the merchants business / profile. So the approval process does take months and charging BIG amount as security.

  3. So much of useful info. Thank you so much!

  4. You probably missed a fast growing one – BillDesk. Quite a few companies (TataSky, Barclays, Vodafone etc ) are using it. I was strongly recommended to check them out due to their ease of integration and support.

    • isnt that for payments using net banking only ? I dont think there’s an option to pay by credit cards in their service.

    • Dear Pranav / Vivek,
I was personally using billdesk.com services for some time.

According to my understanding about billdesk.com, it requires an ECS mandate to your Bank Account for paying bills(mostly, if not all of Post paid category). We cannot use that for making ecommerce payments.

Normally service providers like Telecom companies, Utility companies & Insurance companies give their subscribers a facility to pay using separate ECS mandate in favour of each company. Instead, in billdesk.com, we give only one ECS mandate in favour of billdesk.com and it uses that ECS mandate for paying any number of service providers we choose. Of course as you know ECS mandate can be given for banks without net banking facility also.

Only advantage is that we are able to consolidate all our post paid bills.

One major disadvantage (personally faced by me) is that even though the billdesk’s due date is prior to the service provider’s due date, but due to delay in billdesk’s payment to service provider, the service provider normally charges fine for our payment (which we might have made to billdesk.com before the actual due date).

In conclusion, billdesk.com = one ECS Mandate = Many service providers(Mostly post paid type). It’s is not an Online payment gateway.

      Thank You
      With Regards
      Santhanam

          • Hi, Needed to setup online payment option for our customers. All concerned are requested to please contact at benefit@ekohealth.in

        • I have been trying to call BillDesk customer support telephone number for the past few days to get more details on their charges, but they did not pick up my call. So, I wonder what the quality of service would be.

          • Bill desk is not for mass market or for small retailers. It looks for huge transaction flow and if not then the signup is more than double of popular payment gateways in india.
Even India Pay has come down from 10k to 6k for Indian merchants ofcourse sans the addons..

        • Hi please do let me know any contact no. of billdesk ppl ……

    • Maybe the worst would be Billdesk, we are having huge problems, everyone is either on leave or quitting jobs. It was cheap to start with but I would be happy if CC Avenue could give us a better offer, I would switch today. There should be some regulatory body looking into all this and also some complaint redressal. This is a company which sleeps half the time.

  6. What if one wants to collect dollar payments in India (via credit cards) ? Are there any options apart from CCAvenue ?

    • use Paypal if you want to collect dollar payments in India

      • @Pranav: In the light of new mess that paypal has created.. What are the options for creating dollar payments in India? I see ccavenue has an option. What about others?

        • Hey,

Did you find any solution for that so far? Even I am looking for a solution to that, really hard to find one!

      • A warning! DO NOT use pay-pal for international transactions. They do not know Indian FEMA regulations; they freeze your account without cause; they do not have any approachable office in India. This is first hand info. My company is an 20 year established exporter. We started to use pay pay-pal because some of our foreign customers found it convenient, rather than go to the bank and execute wire transfers. Paypal processed one transaction of about 400 USD for spares, and the second transaction of 2,400 for a small piece of equipment was frozen.

We had to go through a lot of trouble to satisfy RBI and then we issued a refund to the customer because we thought it prudent not to deal in this manner. Paypal took 6 months to release the funds, and we lost more than Rs. 30,000 in deductions and forex rate difference.

Our normal transactions with customers is between 10,000 to 25,000 USD, which is done through traditional banking channels. Since that bad experience, we have decided to use only traditional banking channels even for small transactions of 300 USD. It is more expensive for us and our customer, but at least both parties are safe and there is complete compliance to RBI regulations.

    • I have been recently discussing payment gateway solutions & Charges – We assured you all – One time setup fee- NO ANNUAL Charges/ NO other charges. What ever amount you will receive we will deduct transaction charges from the receiving amount.

You will interested to know how this works. It is very transparent for every one.

  7. Thanks Pranav for this info ..Great job !!

  8. which gateway can be used if we also want DEBIT card payment .. ?
which among the above [players give the service with least transaction charge… ?
and how does integrating more than one merchant gateway works …?

    • nikhil,

most of the payment gateways support net banking (debit cards). However, few may provide support for additional banks than others.

Why would you want to integrate more than one merchant gateway ? Its more headache from all aspects – technical, financial, management etc. Doesnt make a lot of sense to have multiple gateways for small to medium ecomm sites.

      • Hi Nikhil,

The VISA elctron debit cards of 12 banks are accepted on any credit card payment gateway..technically a debit card transaction is same as credit card.

    • Dear Nikhil,

HDFC Bank provides an interface for accepting Debit cards too, along with the Credit cards on its sole Payment Gateway interface itself, additionally by giving its users (Cardholders) the necessary notification on the paypage that Debit cards are also accepted, but only the ones which are Visa and MasterCard ENROLLED i.e., in accordance with the RBI rule.

  9. 1. Which of these payment gateways support mobile payments?

    • ccavenue does. I think ebs also does support mobile payments.

      • CCAvenue do not supports mobile payment. They had not even started yet.

        • What Bullshit, Joby. CCAvenue has PayMate and SBI freedom as mobile payment options for the last three years. They also have CCAvenue PhonePay, which is a very good IVR solution that we are using for the last couple of months for our memberships collections on phone. The best part is that they are giving it free with every ccavenue account. Its a brilliant package with 50+ payment options, free merchant account, free risk management, no chargeback representation fees, free IVR etc. They are worldclass and no other PG comes remotely close to their offerings or service. Regards, Abhijan.

        • No, ccavenue supports mobile payment option

  10. Hi,
I have a query. I understand that I need payment gateway if I want to accept payments through credit card etc. But in net banking, if I have given my account information then the customer can login to his bank account (on his bank site) and can transfer funds to my account. I think no gateway is required at my site for this.
Is it like that the customer will be able to login to his bank account through my site hence the payment gateway is required?

    Please clarify.

    Regards
    Manish

    • Dear Manish,

If your website requires automatic transaction information for processing customer’s orders, then you will require payment gateway. Also you cannot expect all your customers to have net banking enabled bank account in the same bank as yours.

If you don’t require automatic transaction information for processeing customer’s orders, then you can ask your customer to deposit the amount either at a branch of your bank(some banks provide facility for cash deposit in any branch without any charges) or net banking transfer or through NEFT (Just costing around Rs.5/- for a transaction). And customer can send the payment infomation via email/your website & you can process the order.

This type of manual processing of transaction will save websites/customers the exorbitant transaction charges collected by payment gateways. I found that some publishers were offering this method apart from net banking coupled with a manual way of processing the orders

      Thank You
      With Regards
      Santhanam

  11. Hi,
I don’t understand fully the problem with paypal. Yes, you can charge only in USD or Euro, but once the Indian customer is going for payment through paypal, the foreign currency gets automatically converted in Indian Rupee, so it;s not that you can not use paypal in India. Of course you should explain your customer what is gonna to happened and it could be a problem for some projects, but for example hotel service is not a problem, if the customer “pays” in USD.
    Regards
    Andre

    • Re PayPal , They will process orders in foreign currency which the customer’s credit card gets charged to. However the real issue is how does PayPal deliver the money to vendor/affiliate’s Indian account? Their terms and conditions do not even mention India in their list of countries. I would not be surprised if this pertains across the board.
      Thanks for raising the issue.

  31. Dear Pranav,

We have a small Charitable trust run out of the money from our pocket and some local sponsors. We would like to scale up the activities in the areas of Medical facilities, Education, infrasturcture and clothings for slums and poor urbans.

In this respect we thought of having a payment gateway to enable our well wishers in India and outside to donate through our website. As you understand that stiff initial charges, transaction or insecurity may hurt the cause of this organisation, I request your suggestions for the right gateway for this.

    Sandip

    • Sandip,
Did you get an answer? hope you have found the right one. Many websites provide a separate pricing plans for NGOs.

    • Hello Sandeep, I recommend PayPal as payment gateway for your website. There are no initial charges for gateway setup and very small charges as transaction fee. You can put a PayPal donate button on your website and anyone in world including India can donate money to your organization.

      • hey friends”"
Paypal has blocked my account for no solid reason,, It will give you a pain at the time you require it most,, nowadays because of moneylaundering problem they are asking such documents from indian,s which are difficult to produce..

  32. Hi Friends,

I want to set up the on-line credit card payment for my client. Upon research I thought the CCAvenue is the best one for on-line payment gateway. Is this is correct or is there any other better choice. Also, can anyone tell me how to set up this in our application. How can we test our application for this functionality? I tried that in the Paypal which provides us with the sandbox in which we can create the test accounts and test our development call through APIs. But is this possible in the case of CCAvenue. Does the CCAvenue has the APIs to be called from our application or is there any other way to call the on-line payment gateway (if so, can anyone kindly let me know the procedure to integrate in our application).

    Thanks in advance.

    • Dont go with CCAvenue. A lot of their CC transaction fail unnecessarily. They are very frustrating.

We can provide IPG services from Merchant Solutions which is a Joint Venture between FDI & Standard Chartered Bank for Asia Pacific.

  37. First of all, fantastic info here. Secondly, all the companies that I’ve spoken to that use CCAvenue are not happy with their service nor their support. Direcpay from Times of Money seems like a good option currently.

    • Hi Seb,

Thats a big statement to make considering more than 90% of Indian websites use CCAvenue PG services. Can you let us know as to which of the merchants whom you have spoken has expressed their unhappiness….or are you just a troll trying to defame them. We are using them for last 7 years and are absolutely satisfied with them. They offer an unbeatable brilliant package with 50+ payment options, free merchant account, free risk management, no chargeback representation fees, free IVR etc. They are worldclass and no other PG comes remotely close to their offerings or service.

Would appreciate if you could list out your contact details as when I click on your link it goes to an american website called virtualloan.com. Will await your reply. Regards, Abhijan.

I think my question may need more clarification…
I am talking about creating/becoming a service such as PayPal,Authorize.net,EBS, Direcpay or CCAVENUE….

  50. This site is truly informational indeed.

I’m an American and was wondering how difficult would it be if I wanted to open a PSP and a PCI compliant gateway in India? How much does it cost and so forth if I want to use the PSP for US based businesses. I’ve spend a ton of time and money talking to “expert professionals” in India, who’ve just taken me for a ride. I’m looking for competent professionals who can help me with this project. I’ll be checking this often so please drop me a message.

  51. Hello,

I tried to pay my BSNL phone bill from Canada through online payment through bsnl website http://billchn.bsnl.co.in/index.html. The payment gateway used by this site is Bill desk. It seems its not accepted any of the credit card both visa/master-card which is issued by Canadian banks.

  52. Hi , After browsing through all of these I am still greedy for an easy and straight answer :-)
I run a very small charitable trust and would like to accept donations/subscirptions via the website.
Ofcourse I would like it to be extremely economical and can compromise on a few features ( like using only Debit Card if that brings down the cost)
I would also very reluctant to pay the cost per transaction- especially since this is the donors money, and we take pride in being a zero overhead organization now.
Thanks a lot …… Any response will be more than welcome

For Charity work with NGOs, we’ll try to work with you and arrange the best available rates provided that these are real charities. Currently we are working on couple projects where we allow people in US to send money to India for a specific cause through their bank account. Credit/Debit/other options can also be added if someone is interested. I may be able to connect you to some organizations here who could be helpful to real charities. Send emails directly to uladdha@indiapay.com with detail information about your charities and what you do and what you need. Thanks.

I hope, this can help us mutually. You can reach on sindhwin@yahoo.co.in

  58. Does anybody know which of these payment gateways works with online dating.
Apparently CCAVenue and EBS don’t work with dating companies.

  59. Majority of Indian payment gateways have a lot of disintegrated platforms like some use cards, some use internet and some use mobile when it come to the common man all these are still not feasible hence a unified system like what is there in US / Singapore etc needs to be coming in India to make payment gateways accessible to common man “aam admi”.

Not a long way to go our technological companies are doing great we have to wait little to get good features to enjoy.

I would like to continue a trail on my blog: http://thomassjacob.wordpress.com
as this topic is going to be interesting ….

  60. Hey,

I had a really bad experience with Direcpay / TimesofMoney. Very unprofessional setup, no decent customer support.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that timesofmoney will be good since they are of times group.

Still looking for a decent Payment Gateway.

    • Dear Shyam,

Only, if at all your platform is on either ASP, ASP.Net only in case if you yourself are liable for the required ASP to .Net migration OR JSP, I would sincerely suggest you to opt for HDFC gateway. Pricing, am not much sure whether it is economical, but technically the overall integration is quite simple and short and the support team there i.e., PGHelpdesk is very much dedicated and sincere towards support.
Note: The integration if worked on by going thru the provided user manual OR else with the help of the helpdesk team, can surely be done withinn just a few hours, i.e., a track record of 37 mins has been registered for completion of integration using pure ASP.

    • Hi Shyam

Can you suggest me which payment gateway is good? i tried with PayPal but it is not well develop in India.

Can you please share with me your experience?

      Many thanks

  68. I am starting a eBusiness in India, I want to know is ccAvenue the best out of it? Can they take China payment like Alipay/ PaymentAsia? If so I will just go for one provider instead of applying for all. Also can they do offshore settlement? I tried to contact a few but yet to get a response from it.

  69. Just find out that IndiaPay is Not PCI-DSS Certified. They are CISP which is Visa USA’s Card Information Security Program; which is not used in Asia-Pacific.
CISP is VISA and PCI is the industries standards committee for credit card security. In a few months, CISP will disappear and everyone will need to meet PCI requirements. The certification process is an annual process.

CCAvenue, One97 Communication (PayTM), Atom Tech are some of the Providers who are PCI-DSS certified.

I dealt with all of them & found One97 more competitive & Services are good too.

  70. Back in Feb 09 i had to make the decision to choose a payment gateway for our ecom business (we are into web hosting). It was not so much a difficult decision as the choice was so limited, from my research the only 2 contenders were ccavenue and ebs. The rest either did not disclose pricing info or they did not want to entertain startups. I kept hoping paypal or google payment would start taking INR payments but that has not happend till now, i guess govt red tape stuff. Anywyas long story short and i went to CCavenue. The paper work was a lot to get the merchant account and we never got credit card facility (which i did not even want) but the experience has been good so far. The payment is on time and the gateway works good. Though they really need to change the payment page, looks like it has been the same since 10 years.

    • Hi Prashant,

I ask this question after reading your comment… we have been using ccavenue for more than 2 years now… but of late, more than 50% our of clients face ‘transaction failure’ and the transaction doesnt get complete. I would like to know if you , or anyone else in this forum face this problem??

      Thanks

  71. Great Article. I am in a process of evaluating a Payment Gateway from my startup and this article is a GodSend.

    Thanks A Ton.

  72. Hi all,

Just thought that I would mention another Payment Gateway that has been operating in India for a few years now. Merchant Solutions (technology provided by DPS – Direct Payment Solutions) offers all credit card/debit card/mobile payments/recurring token billing/customizable hosted payments pages for full PCI compliance in INR. We are partnered with the Standard Chartered Bank in India and support all development platforms.

We already have numerous merchants throughout India using the system successfully and some major telecommunications providers coming on board soon.

I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have – sam.ling@paymentexpress.com

  73. I read the article I got much information

  79. the information posted by the author and the users is helpful but nt conclusive.
I saw another comparison which rates transecute very highly.

I was about to finalize however a rough comparison indicate that they charge very high ie 7.5% for every transaction worth 1000.

a few things …..if clarified i will really be grateful

    1) Any alternative to CCavenue with less commission % and similar range of features.

    2) My site is going to be commercial one similar to xtees one, (select –> add to cart –> check out) how does ‘Payment on delivery’ mode works, does the courier company take care of the collecting and handing over the amount from the customer or its usually ‘in house’ home delivery solution.

    3) If I incorporate CCavenue or any other decent gateway , is the ‘order tracking’ mechanism seamless and the gateway company handles it or , I have to tell my develop to build a separate module for order tracking and chasing.

Any help suggestion ( in point wise manner) is appreciated
    thanks in advance

    cheers,
    Akash

  80. Hello,

We have started our website http://www.rechargeguru.com for providing mobile & dth recharge for prepaid connections in India.

We are using paypal. As all know that paypal.

Recently around mid of December we have tied with
ebs.in payment processor. There support team is quite well efficient. But just be attentive when u make call to them regarding the Sign-up & integration charges.

There are some loop holes. So be clear and get every thing in written via email.

Will share more experience in coming days. If u have any query please email me.

    Regards
    Apurv.

    • Hi Apurv,

read your comment about EBS.in – we were shortlisting that for our india website. Anything specific you can share regarding the lopp holes in their proposal?

      Thanks for your help.
      SID

      • Hello,

We have got our first payment from ebs.in 12 days back.

But still 45 days has passed they have not activated other banks payment system and visa credit card payment system on our website http://www.rechargeguru.com

There are some loop holes, please keep all email records with u every time you are going to call them.

For now my first experience i will rate 5 out of 10. Where 10 is for best, marks are cut because credit card interface not activated.

        Regards
        Apurv.

        • EBS is the worst gateway. They dont provide service and only false promises. I paid them full money for my website gateway. They made all sorts of promise but could not deliver the gateway. After 4 months of juggling they are saying the bank is not giving them approval to issue gateways to company.
EBS has been recently sold. They are defaulting on their payments and API’s.
Most of the time their service is down and servers are not responding. They have lost many good customers in last few weeks.
PLEASE DONT USE EBS GATEWAY else you will be trapped too!

    • Dear Apurv

Thank You to share your experience with us. I am also using paypal but they are unable to transfer my money to my indian bank. Also cheque time is around 60 days.

Can you suggest me which Payment Gateway is good?

Did you also have problem with paypal?

I am waiting for your reply.

      Many Thanks
      Regards,

  81. Hello All,

I have been going through all the post and thought I could make some contributions to the same.

We have been using Payseal (ICICI), Billdesk and PayPal gateways connected with our sites. Let me assure you that there are no companies in India which are of good standards with support and service. You need to have your own tech team to do research and get rid of the glitches.

As for the commercials, the best suited would be ICICI with their payment processing fees in the 2.5-3% segment and setup in the region of 20K to 30K. You can always negotiate if you have large volumes.

You must also keep in mind that since debit cards can be processed on these gateways there is no real or pressing need to have NetBanking facilities bcos if you have a bank account, you do have a ATM-Debit card for sure. So no real need of going to 3rd party aggregators for netbanking.

Even with regards to economy, I would always suggest to have a direct merchant account with the banks as they are very competitive and even if you are processing 5 lacs annually you will be saving the setup fees which you are paying them as compared to any aggregator.

Integration wise, AXIS is the easiest as it does not require any DLL or extra installation on the server as with other banks this will lead to you buying a virtual dedicated server at an extra cost.

BillDesk does provide some really good options and their payout mechanism etc is also smooth. You might want to check if the setup cost suits you.

A cost analysis would be as follows :

Direct Merchant Account from Banks :
    Setup – Rs. 25K – 50K
    Transaction Cost – 2.5% approx.

    3rd Party Aggregators:
    Setup – 5K – 25K
Transaction Cost – 3.5%-7% approx (whoops)

    PayPal :
    Setup – Rs. 0
Transaction Cost – 3.9% + 0.15 cents (dont forget that if you convert from foreign currency to INR then 3% is charged extra for currency conversion rate)

Finally, I would suggest that either go in for PayPal or get yourself a direct merchant code from ICICI, AXIS or HDFC bank.

    • Hi Cherag

Thank you to share your experience with us.

I am having problem with PayPal as they are not transfer money into my bank. Even the cheque time is around 60 days or more. I receive payment through credit cards from my international customer.

I am waiting for your reply.

    • Dear Cherag,

Could you please share with me any red flags to watch out for with Billdesk.

Also, any loopholes in terms of coordinating the integration with them would be helpful.

  82. Hello,

It will be good if paypal start accepting INR. Because we can use same paypal account on multiple websites.

If you are buying online regularly then also it makes sense using paypal.

Paypal Fees 3.4% and not setup costs. Compare with Indian payment gateways you will see the difference.

2CO also allow INR. bUt minimum payouts have to be Rs.1,00,000/-

    Thankyou,

    DEVANG

I accept almost 30,000 USD each month from US, UK and other countries. I was using paypal but having a problem from few days as they have stopped payment from personal paypal accounts from client.

I was anyway planning to change them since they send money to India in INR and not Forex . Also their conversion rate is very bad.

What are the options to accept foreign currencies of this volume. Shall I go to an India provider like ccavenue, icici, axis bank or hdfc or international like authorize.net or 2checkout etc

Please advise. I want to get money in India in USd and then get local concersion rates.

  90. Dear all,
Good job done…very well knitted and informative thread.Though lot of deliberations and PoVs have been discussed and raised in this thread.
Still the doubt looms large as to which is the best PG that can stand best at all the discussed parameters of :
    1. Customer service
    2. TDR charges
    3. Set up cost
    4. Annual maintenance cost
    5. Other cost of quality
Please correct me if i’m wrong but my guess says the answer to this question is none,as it us as a new start up that needs to decide which PG is best suiting to our requirements in terms of 1. No. of expected transactions 2. Type of API support 3. Continuity of services on the basis of f/bs provided
I shall be using it for my business in wellness industry……..all the best for the search

  91. I have a requirement where I need to support
Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Online accounts, Visa, Master, Maestro for of my client application. Initial and recurring cost also must be minimal.

Which service would be better for me.

  92. i got payment from overseas into my paypal account . but could not get into my bank account…..please advise me ….i sell online

    regards

  93. i have just mailed to two of the solution providers, lets look at the response and decide.
This dscussion has been very informative and healthy, do keep up the good work.

  94. Glad to revisit this page. There are some factually incorrect comments from Aakash above which I like to correct. IndiaPay is completely PCI compliant and has level 1 certification being certified on annual basis at not only with PCI-DSS but also SAS70 which is much more stringent than PCI. PCI Level 1 means our platform process more than 10 million transactions a year. Our volume for 2009 was approx 450 million transactions including US, EU, Asia and other regions. There are 22 processing networks connected to our platform including Visa, MS, Amex etc. There are 40 banks or financial institutions talk with the gateway across the world. There is simply no other provider in India matching this depth. We process Credit, debit, ACH (ECS, RTGS, NEFT), Paper Cheques and Gift/Loyalty transactions. Our API allows developers to code interface in Java, .Net, PHP, CGI, C++, SOAP/XML web services. The usual development time is not more than few hours for experienced developer for all above types of transactions. Front end which could connect to includes Physical POS system (ATM, Kiosk, Cash Registers, Various Card swipes and terminals) , Web, Mobile, IVR, Software ( ERPs like SAP, Oracle, accounting systems like Tally and Quick Books). More than 150 shopping carts have direct plugins to our systems. You can simply integrate all of these payment mechanisms into any of your hardware, software or mobi/IVR applications using the extensive API which is already built in. We promote our resellers and incentivize them by providing best TDR and lowest transaction fee possible to their merchants/users. Major difference with other players and IndiaPay is payment consolidation which provides all payment channels in one single pipe.

    Right now you can accept

    1. Credit/Debit cards from across the world and not just India.

    2. Direct debits/Remittances from US, EU and China customers from their bank accounts.

    3. ECS/RTGS/NEFT/Direct debit payments from any Indian bank account holder.

    4. Paper checks – American and Indian.

Feel free to drop me a line and I can provide you the integration manual.

    Rgds,

    Unmesh

  97. Indian payment gateway really needs to improve by miles, having said that in the current stage one has 2 options:

    1) Go with the banks (HDFC, ICICI)

They charge from 2% to even 5 or 6% based upon how much you are willing to spend.

But be ready to serve them with number of painful documents, and in some cases you might also be asked to place in a fixed deposit in the bank ranging from 1 to 5 lakhs.

    Positives –
    Comparatively better customer service,
Relatively quick transfer of funds to your account
Lesser per transaction cost (This also depends on your negotiations with the bank)

    Negatives –
Lots of documentation and a lengthy process
Increase in investment due to requirement of fixed deposit (in some cases)
In some cases banks offer relatively lesser avenues of payments (like no option is available for payment through mobile, certain banks debt card and internet banking)

    2) 3rd party vendors (Timeofmoney, CCAvenue)
Their per transaction fee ranges from 3.5% – 7% while the cost of procurement of the service will range from 7,000 to about 40,000.

    Positives –
Quick process, not as many documents or fixed deposits required
Large avenues for funds transfer available, as these vendors have tied up with number of banks.

    Negatives –
    Poor customer service
Long lag period in transferring of funds to your account (ranging from 1 to 2 weeks)
    Higher per transaction cost

PayPal currently is not an option for the Indian vendors, as the USD funds are not permitted to be transferred in Indian currency due to certain issues raised by RBI.

So make a wise decision considering all the pros and cons.

  98. Thanks a lot for starting this thread ..this is just what I was looking for!!

  102. which is the cheapest payment gateway available in India for online transfer

  103. Hi,
I am in the process of starting up an online business where my expected transactions will be few but the cost per transaction is going to be very high. As such, I can’t afford to have any failed transaction on my site.
Can anybody suggest a PG with a good track record and low rate of charge for the transaction?

  105. Sharad Pandey

    Hi,

I am looking for a gateway which is economical as well secure for the transaction supporting currencies -Dollar/Indian Rupee

  106. rather interesting thread. very useful for startups, we think.

  107. I have gone through the all the comments ,however no one seems to concern about the chargback issue. I hope whatever payment gatway is used it seems no one has read the fine prints of agreement.
The payment gatway will debit the merchant immediately on any chrageback request whether you have delivered the product even after two months also . Recently we have a case wherin the order placed in January was executed in time and materail delivered to party in Jan itself however we were shocked to see that payment gatway has put the chargbeack in March 30th for the tran done in Jan and debited our a/c. When we contacetd them we were asked to see the agreement and as per the agrement merchant will be debited immediately . L ater provide the Proff of delivery , order details etc to take up the case with Master/Visa network. we awere aslo told by gateway that these are card used fraudulatenly by someone and now actual card holders has filed complain to their card issuing bamk in turn issuing bank has sent to master visa and they debited paymant gateway and in turn mechant is debited.

As the card details is given by the customer in the payment gatway only and there are 3 d secure or 3rd layer of security check etc at the time of authntication of tran by the gatways why the merchant should be penalised for this. As merchant only give delivery of servicers/material based on the credit given by payment gatway and have by no means knowing that the card is used is not fradualtenly aquired by the person. We were told that all banks are govrned by the Master /Vise rules in India. I have cheked even the ccavenue has this clause in the agreement and for tran done through stolen card/information the merchant will be debited immediately.

So I request all of you to read the fine print of your agreement with the payment gatway and talk to your payment gatways service provider and try to understand the chargback issues. I still feel that merchant is at the reciving end in this process as they have no means to know that customer is using his own card for the transaction or the fradualtely stolen card.

I would also like to know if any one has solution for this and any payment gatway in India who does not penalise merchant for no fault of them.

  108. Which ones offer an API for integration? I dont want my customers to be redirected to another site for payment.

PayPal offers website Payments Pro with an API but its not available in India.

IndiaPay offers one it seems. Has anyone used it?

  109. Even though these payment gateways are active in India, we need more bargaining power to get the best offer from them. Even paypal is a li’l expensive

  110. Quite useful information. I was also doing a similar research for my startup (www.longlongago.in).

Paypal has opened the services again in India. fyi.

    Regards.

  111. Rama Shanker Singh

Can anybody help me for how can we use payment gatway.

i want E-Commerce revolution on my web site like Mobile Recharge if i signed with X payment gateway, if any customer want to topup on his mob, then after entering his Mob no. and Amount, and required credential then
Who exactly topup his mobile?? is it Payment gateway or needs any other setup for topup…….???

  116. hi ,
i am about to launch my website with one of the payment gateways, looking at the above comments, it seems really difficult, rather impossible to get ccavenue for us “sole proprietors” they say it like its a bad thing ..so the only option seems like EBS or Directpay. the person designing my website managed to get a reply from direct pay, where their rates are like almost exactly the same as EBS . So here im confused…which one should i go for? im nt sure if tie ups with several banks like ccavenue is a criteria for judging ebs n all ? can someone please help ….both ebs and directpay are known so i dnt know what to really look at here

  117. wow.. what an amazing thread of information.

  120. Hi All,
I called up a few of the payment gateway options and this is what I got. I asked in terms of an NGO.

    - Indiapay – They seemed professional and had special rates for NGOs. They charge about 3% per transaction. They currently do Cleartrip.com.

One97 Communication – They charge about Rs30,000 as a start up payment and then its 2.75% per transaction

EBS – They said they dont do NGOs so we did not speak further

Merchant Solutions – he said an ngo had to be etablished for three years before they would consider us so we did not speak further.

Talent Whiz – They also sounded quite professional and have different tiers of payments. They sounded professional as well.

As an NGO, I would go for Indiapay. The only thing is if I would fit into their profile or not.

I wanted to ask if anyone had any recent experiences with Paypal in India. I am hearing a lot of mixed reviews. Would really appreciate it if someone could let me know.

    thanks,
    Helen

    • Hi Helen,

Thanks for the info. Can you please let me know the set up fee for india pay and their contanct details?

      Regards,
      Biju Thajudien

  121. I am planning to open a sub-broking outfit for stock market trading for my clients, i want my clients to transfer fund onloine to my bank accoutn as they trade.

How do i go about it?

  122. I’m also getting mixed reviews about paypal and have been trying to apply with Indian payment gateways to put on my site. Because I am in Australia, I can’t seem to find any Indian payment gateway that would allow me to trade. Do I need to open an Indian bank account or something? Helen have you regsitered with Indiapay. Has it worked?

  123. Hi Arvind,
I haven’t registered with Indiapay as yet. I have opened an Account with Kotak Mahindra and they have assured me that they will offer me a payment gateway service. I don’t quite believe them, and once my account is opened next week, will have a clearer idea of it.

I actually got an email from paypal saying that they have legal and regulatory restraints in India so I can’t use them as an NGO. Not too sure if it works for commercial enterprices.

You could sign up with them, its free, and see what they email back to you.

My experience has been that the best way for any info is to call up the company directly. Talentbeat is a mobile number and someone picks up immediately and so is Indiapay, so you don’t waste a lot of long distance money being put on hold.
    Hope that helps..
    Helen

  124. Anuarg Bansal

    Hi

    Everyone

My name is Anurag Bansal .. and i need a online payment solution for my business . so i m so confused .
i have to go with Third party payment gateway (ccavenue , EBS , Direcpay ) or i have to go with the bank (HDFC , ICICI , CITI BANK ) .

so anyone can help me so please contact me via mail .

    my mail is – anurag5@iname.com

    Thanks

  125. Hello Anurag,

I believe setting up third party payment gateway would be the easiest both in terms of software integration and paperwork involved initially. I would suggest look at EBS and ccAvenue in detail. I have created a list of points that may help you zeroing down on one of the options. Here is the link

    http://www.friendsofbooks.com/blog/top-ten-questions-for-payment-gateways

    Thank you,
    Manish

  126. ok so here is the issue …

cc avenue seems to be good..but has something against sole proprietors……. i have contacted them lets see their response if this is really true..

then comes direct pay….they want you to upload your website, go live and then after 15 days or so they will consider the application.. so basically i would have to upload an e commerce website without an option to sell……. they will take their own sweet time to consider after maybe people think my website is useless…

now come to ebs . they responded really fast and were totally ready to start the process..(really fast i mean i got a call and an email within an hour) they were like not even ready to wait for me to consider ..which made me feel a bit wierd…

i would want to know if anyone is using ebs, i mean are they good ? their tie ups are less considering cc avenue or direct pay. and im running out of time.

    what to do ?

  127. for satish

    taking a bank payment gateway,
i contacted my own bank hdfc, their system was relaly wierd.. they wanted me to be running my business for like atleast 2 years prior to opening the website, plus they wanted an fd for about 10 lakhs to be made against a payment gateway. it makes it almost impossible to go for..maybe any other banks are might be not this unreasonable ..what would u suggest then

  128. Hello Pallavi,

ccAvenue paperwork does seem daunting, but is usually not an issue. We were able to get an account as sole proprietors. EBS is also good, and yes, they are prompt.

    Manish

  129. hi manish,

so you are using cc avenue then or ebs ?

  130. I have never used CCAvenue before. I have always used ICICI and found it very nice. Good customer service and timely response. No problems so far.

But I will surely give CCAvenue a try as well.

Also, I wasnt aware that IRCTC provided details of transcations. This is really good.

  131. Hi Pallavi,

    We are currently using ccAvenue.

  132. Someone said paypal can be used in India…. I am launching my business and website newly and don’t want to spend thousands and lakhs just to get a payment gateway.
From my understanding and what I learn from above comments about paypal

    PROS:
Paypal is free to start (no setup fees)
Easy to integrate in websites with lots of APIs and examples available

    CONS:
INR payment is not possible in paypal
Other then some 3-4 % transaction fee, I also need to pay some 3% currency conversion to INR
To get the money to India it may take as long as 60 days or more.

Is their more about payapl to be used for business in India with customers worldwide. If someone is using it please share your experience. People here said that their are mixed reviews about paypal, it will help in knowing these reviews.

I am fine with accepting payments in USD as long as customers in India can also make such payments using their credit cards and online payments from Indian banks.

Can someone share their experience about real time taken to get your money from paypal to your bank account in India. What all is required to get paypal account for business in India, also any issue we can have using paypal gateway…

    • Hi pradeep,

I found whiz Pay as a great gateway. its a indian company but was doing business in US. recently they started providing services in India. i was really confused in selecting a gate way and was not interested in entertaining new companies. Just to do research I gave a try by calling up this company (Talent beat). and i found that they support 36 country currencies . And various other features that they provide are unique in India.I am very happy by looking at the results.

Thanks to startup duniya for providing me their contact number they are quick in responding and very professional.

      Thanks Talent Beat!

  133. It should have SSL encryption, and PSS-DI certification
What are the various payment options you want to use?
    It should be user friendly
    Should have good customer support
Few things should be kept in mind before choosing A gate way:

It should be quick in importing and exporting data for accounting
There should be no need for you to be present at every transaction that occurs
Should know Shopping Carts are compatible with your intended payment gateway
    currency conversion
    100% Server up time
    IP Address mapping
Always think of long term cost

  135. HI, I woudl like to know one solution for payment gateway

  136. Hi,
We are going to develop one Application which is based on Cellphone SMS. In our application End user will buy/pay some government stuff(like Electricity bill, Wealth Tax etc.) by a single sms. We are facing a problem of payment. We thought following options.

Money will deduct direct from Prepaid Connection Balance and Mobility Service Provider (Like BSNL, Reliance etc.) will handle remain transaction with government.

So we need to know that, is this a possible way of payment or not?
If not than please guide me some possible way for payment.

  137. Nice and fruitful discussion going over here. If anybody interested in getting ‘ccavenue’ account 4 less than displayed on their website. Just get in touch with us.

  138. Hey guys,
Do anyone know whether there is any recurrence option in CCAvenue API so that I can charge my customers on regular basis(monthly/yearly) automatically?

    Thanks

  139. Hi Dave,

I am not sure about CC Avenues regarding this solution but yes Talent Beat (whizpay) can definitely help you regarding this solution.

  140. Hi Pranav,

I was really happy to see a detailed comparison and discussion here on payment gateways.

I am myself looking for a payment gateway and had contacted indiapay and ccavenue. But they are not willing to provide their services for ‘Social Networking Websites’ saying they fall under high-risk category.

Could you throw some light into what this could mean? Ofcourse, my website will be clean and niche.

    Please comment.

    Regards,

    Ravi Mittal

  141. which is better EBS Or CCAvenue ,

  142. Hi Kasi

After all the discussions, I feel that CC-Avenue has some issues and EBS seems to be a better bet.

  143. Hello All,

  144. can any one sugesst me the best gateway available i am getting confused by reading the Comments.

  145. I would like to clear a few doubts people are having with the experience I have had till now for getting a payment gateway.

    1. CCAvenue sucks because they are too snobbish to take your request. They have about 4000 customers and unless you are very potential to them, they will discard you saying your services are illegal.

    2. Times of Money and ABCpayments have the same issues.

    3. EBS was quite responsive. They understood my requirement.

    4. Talent Beat were the 1st one to contact me. I would have loved working with them but they do not have net banking options and a very few debit card linking.

All in all, there is a big time monopoly of CCAvenue, EBS and TimesofMoney. They will take your request at their own interest. They all are doing excellent business (one of the players in my city is adding 30-40 portals every month!).

Its high time anyone in this forum thought of starting a payment gateway service. It could be quite profitable!

  146. Hi,

This page is very informative. I’ve a big problem. I provide online technical support services to USA/UK by the name of http://www.pccare247.com. I tried using paypal for taking payments, but they’ve blocked our account and cancelled it and held the payment for 180 days. I tried EBS, they accepted payments for some time and then freezed the account and help our amount for 180 days. What can be a reliable permanent solution for me? Someone suggested opening a US company and opening a bank account with a US bank and getting their gateway is the solution for everything. Can somebody explain what should I do?

    • Don’t blame the gateways because what you are doing is illegal and falls under cyber crime (remote access in illegal in many countries, plus you breach their privacy policy which is clearly stated in their TOS). this will continue to happen with all the gateways when they will come to know about you business.

  147. Hi,

Thanks for the information. Our company is also looking for e-commerce solution. We had emailed all the players and now waiting for response!!

  148. Having high regards to this Topic which is opening up knowledge sharing to avoid pitpalls of PG…

We are looking for adding a payment gateway system on our website, we are into Niche business similiar to 99acres.com in terms of revenue generation, we have user mostly from outside India in ratio of 60% foreigners and 40% Indians. Volumes are in start up range not big. Which payment gateway is most reliable, efficient, economical and easy to use.

My initial Plan is plan was with CCavenue primary becos of More bank tie-up ignoring the fact of high TDR but they have this limitation with their 2 gateway which willn’t overlap to ful fill my requirement…I wanted INR charged for indian users and for Dollar transcation for Outside India User though I have designed website to show product values in their local currency , but transcation in PG for all Non-Indian users will be dollars irrespective of their local currency….which means INR & DOLLARS are only two currency used….They suggested me to have 2 a/c from each gateway :(

In the same thread , I see someone using 2 gateway…I’m not sure wheather this is opt solution…Provide me your suggestion.

We shall be happy to install a payment gateway system on out site, if the pricing offered is competative and right immediately within a couple of days time.

Thanks and please reply at 121praveen@gmail.com

  149. dear friends

i want to implement a payment gate way in my new website related to insuracne.

which gateway is usefull and economicaly good for my website.

    binu

  150. Hi All,

I am planning to start a website and have read all the posts above. Now I am utterly confused on what to do. I will tell you my requirements.
    1. I will have Indian as well as International customers. To make things clear; anyone logins from india, will be directed to the INR Page and any from the rest of the world to Dollar page.
(CC Avenue has different login for INR and Dollar transaction; So I am confused whether I should setup different accounts I don’t know!!!).

    2. I need a gateway which will charge me less, because large amount transaction is going to happen.

    3. Easy processing (Should not take much time)

    4. Transparent..(No hidden things)

Any one of you can contact me with all the details including setup, amc, charges for transaction etc. Contact me personally if you can..

    email:anusurendran@gmail.com

  151. Settlement can be done on INR. I mean, both indian customers and international customers should be able to make payment through one gateway.

  152. Hi all,

We want to use online payment gateway to receive the application fees from candidates. Which one is good to use in this requirements.

  154. This is the most informative thread i have ever seen.

I wish to share my experience and concerns regarding providers of PG.

    1. Banks seem not interested at all. After a long chase No reply came from ICICI.
    2. Then somebody told me about One97. Abhishek visited and convinced me about their services. Charges were too high 7%. But no other options seemed working. Over that they wanted ICICI people to visit my office( Visit was made- All systems were shown. They were impressed- Running business for 5 years, All documented business and No scope of any fraud. But still bank would require me to have an FD. Quite confusing.

3 Nothing happened after that. Now it is nearly a year. Never received a call from one 97 despite giving them Rs 10,000 by cheque as advance for setup. No contact by themever during this period .

4 I still need the services of a good PG but my experience has shaken my interest.

5 Meanwhile , i kept on motivating customers to deposit money directly into my roaming account. The sales grew 10 times during this period – but i lost a growth of 25 times because of ICICI and one 97 together.

6 My word of advise, They would love to have you on their client list if you are a tata or reliance company but shall be least supportive if you are a startup.

7 I would love to hear from One97 or ICICI on my mobile 91-9718215656

Best wishes to all startup companies,
    Navneet

looking at the current requirement i did the inquiry with all the players.
CC Avenues Charges x% for transaction through Amex, Diners, JCB, where as it charges y% for transactions through master and visa. which is quite Expensive.

Can you guys tell me what is the volume of transaction through American Express, Diners, & JCB so that i can make decision?????
I Don’t think that transaction volume through these International cards is more than 5%.

    what you Guys Think????

  158. Please visit the following url About the Paypal frauds are they true any suggestios

    http://www.techtree.com/India/News/PayPal_Payments_To_From_India_Blocked/551-109181-643.html

  159. Hi All,

This is great imformative page. I am going to launch a listing based website (sole propreitor) next month where customers from across the globe including India will make payments for listing / advetsitment. Interested suitable PG to pls. contact me at my below e-mail ID with details. Ours is a global look site where customer ideally should know the site owner belongs to which country, as it has no relevance and same for all users across the globe. I did some research on PG. Some of my questions here as follows:

    1. CC Avenues offers option of INR and USD accounts. The problem is that in case if I select INR account of CC Avenues, as I could read on CC Avenue website that the customer will come to know that the dollar payment is getting converted to INR which is not in line to our requirement of maintaining a global feel of the site.

    2. If I select USD account of CC avenues, it meets our global feel requirement but it does not provide facility for Indian customers to pay by debit card and NEFT thereby chances of losing many customers. Correct me if I am wrong.

I would prefer to have a PG which in addition to all statutory requirements fulfils our following needs:

    a) The customer should not come to know during that transaction that money is getting converted to INR so that the global feel of the website remains.

    b) The Indian customers should be able to pay through options of credit card, debit card and NEFT (same like Indian railways site)

Can someone suggest a PG who can provide one account to meet all these needs of ours or otherwise may be we will have to take both accounts of INR and USD of ccavenues.

I cannot go for fixed deposit with any banks and cannot wait for any PG’s condition to launch the site first and payment integration later after few days. Payment integration with the website must be befoe the launch of the website.

Also, does CC Avenues or any other PG offer to have only one time setup cost for me irresepective of any no. of website I launch.

    Looking forward to early reply.

Here is me Avnish Mishra. I just want to confirm that is der any possibilities to get MOTO Payment Gateway/Merchant Service. I have International Customers. Daily business Up to 5 Lac INR.

    Drop an e-mail avnish_mishra18@yahoo.com

  169. Dear Team ,
I do not sure about one thing which all of you are saying that paypal does not transfer the amount to Indian Bank Account .

I am using Paypal from last 3 years . What I have done :
    1- I am using Magento .
2-In background I convert the price from US$ to INR . ( In website it will be show in India Rupees it will reduce the currecy exchange rate also which is charges by Paypal .
For example : product Price is 1000 Rs. and today currency exchange rate is 45 Rs. so total amount is 22.22 US$ (-) 4% =21.3312 US$ will be charged to customer which will be equal to 1000 Rs. after currency exchange .
3- Once I will get 21.33 US$ in my account , there is option for NEFT Transfer to Indian Bank account . Normally I transfer to SBI account . And I get money with in 2-3 days .
This is best option to use because no annual maintinance , no setup fees .
Other options like CC avenue ,ICICI Payseal,HDFC are best but for large enterprise who has atleast everymonth 2-3 Lac Rs./ of sale .
    Thanks & Regards
    Vikas

    • Hi Vikas,

Just needed some info from you. In your case, I beleive that you are accepting only credit cards and not any netbanking. Is that right? Am asking this as paypal supports only credit cards.

Also, one thing I want to ask out of the PG topic is about Magento. I am starting a new ecommerce site and I plan to use magento. Can you tell me hw is it working for you and also if you know any good Magento developers.

Really appreciate your reply on this. Thanks a lot in advance.

    • Hi Vikas,
I wonder how much the bank charges you on the NEFT transfer.
“Once I will get 21.33 US$ in my account , there is option for NEFT Transfer to Indian Bank account . Normally I transfer to SBI account . And I get money with in 2-3 days”

Everytime I do such a transfer, bank invariably charges a commission (around 0.3%) or changes the Currency Conversion Rate for this transfer service.

Secondly, how do you reconcile/track your exact margins given the different currency rates at different stages of transaction (catalog browsed, order placed, order dispatched, payment processed, funds released in USD, funds transfered via NEFT).

Appreciate a private response to my above email ID

      Thanks
      Vinodh

Can anybody suggest a PG with a good track record and low rate of charge for the transaction?

Is it still worth to use Paypal service for these kind of small amount?

  172. The information regarding the payment gateway was very useful.
I went through all comments too.

I am not sure if Ccavenue presents a good opportunity for start ups as they charge 7% for an economy plan.

I contacted ICICI and they have a criteria of minimum 1 Crore revenue for applying for their Payseal gateway. This is really funny. They are not approachable for any start-Up anyway!

  173. please send solution for implementing gateway account on my web -dsandpd@gmail.com

  174. So guys whats the final outcome.
Which payment gateway should we use for accepting payments in India?

  175. Greetings I recently finished reading through through your blog along with I’m very impressed. I actually do have a couple inquiries for you personally however. Do you consider you’re thinking about doing a follow-up posting about this? Will you be likely to keep bringing up-to-date as well?

      • Dear Amit,

I believe that your mobile no is incorrect in your post, showing 11 digits.

Was trying to send you an SMS but could not, hence have sent you an email.

We have to finalize a Gateway within 24 hours and I hope we get to talk before that.

Would appreciate if you can give me a call on the number given in the email I sent you anytime as soon as possible.

I have given up on using DIRECPAY ( I hope these guys are reading this) as had got a mail from them week back about someone contacting us. A week gone, no call.

Today morning managed to get through to their Phone Support in Mumbai after calling for hours, thought they are on unlimited holidays.. :( , the lady told I would have you called in an hour…It is now 9 hours since then and no call, no email and no one picked up the ringing phones since that time….

Perfect case study of how to spoil a brand, they have surely lost a customer and with our long term plans, surely something they might regret over time..

        Thanks,
        Raj

  185. Is there any free payment gateway accepting credit card, debit card and net banking payments????

  186. I plan to sell paperback books with all copyrights on website , delivery by national or international speed post parcel after receiving payment. I want no chargebacks as that would simply ruin my business , my refund policy would be clearly stated on my website. One method is to accept payment directly in hdfc account and dispatch parcel after confirming it by logging in to netbanking acc. Can I accept wire transfers from customers abroad to hdfc account, are they subject to chargebacks ??

    thx in advance

    • Dear Ankit
Best wishes for your project ahead.
If you think wire transfer could fulfill your requirement then you could go ahead with same. But in case of WT no one could place order online, he will just transfer the fund depending upon telecommunication.

In case you want someone to visit your web site and place order then in such scenario, i would recommend you to take only take net banking facility wherein charge back option is quite less and even if it happens then you could charge the same to the end user who has placed the order as money would have been debited from end user’s a/c.

In this regard TechProcess Solutions could provide you net banking facility of 22 banks where in any user having a/c in any of the bank could place the order online and make the payment.

  188. Hi,

I am launching a web-portal providing services in the education sector in India. The transaction size will be small (Less than Rs. 50) and the business will be seasonal with operations only for 3 months in a year. I am expecting the value of annual transactions to be less than 30 lacs for the first year.

Please suggest a PG for the same. I think EBS and CCAvenue hold some promise. However high start-up costs and/or high TDR will be an issue.

There is no payment gateway apart from Paypal (or other such players) that could offer you the online payment services without any initial cost. Whether you sold 5000 products or 1 Lacs products there will be set up charges if you require all online payment solutions like Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Net Banking and Cash Cards.

  201. What does “Multi Currency Acceptance” and”Multi Currency Settlement” means when we take a merchent account.

    • Multi currency acceptance is the ability of a merchant to accept payments in more than one currency. For instance a merchant can accept payments in INR and USD giving the customer a choice to pay in the currency of their choice. This is typical for many web based services where overseas users prefer to pay in USD. Even though a merchant can transact in different currencies it usually settles with the bank in one currency.
Muti currency settlement is the ability of a merchant to transact and settle in multiple currencies. This is very common with international airlines where banks offer airlines to transact in multiple currencies and settle in at least five major currencies.

Multiple currency acceptance has implications on exchange rates and credit card companies and banks generally take premium from it.

Dynamic Currency Conversion or DCC is another service that many merchants use to bypass bank and credit card conversion fees. The fees are set by the service providers who speculate the exchange rate at the time of the transaction. Very effective in travel and hospitality industry.

  202. CCAvenue is the best Indian payment gateway ever. With all the recent problems with Paypal I would recommend using CCAvenue.

The worst service i ever had. They just disable card solution just for technical maintenance. The EBS person send us mail that it will be done in 5-7 days maximum and even after 14 days there is NO result.
    Very bad customer service.

My company name is HS Trims, in Mumbai, but we are simultaneously in the process of forming a new closely held company for this e-commerce project. Please be noted Mass payment or rather Individual payment from us to the user is a critical requirement, I find Paypal has this feature.

  210. Hi All,
I had recently signed up with EBS and also their recommeded E commerce shopping cart hosting, the performance has been dismal, pathetic until now, all my efforts, investment is going down the drain as they lied about their product and its performance, a lot of payments are failing, customers are having major difficulties in sign up and order the products on the site, inconsistency between EBS and the shopping cart software in terms or orders and payments, Horrible customer support and no one seem to take responsibility and accountability, I think all payment gateways in India have bad service, more of transaction failures, lack of knowledge about the process etc I would recommend not to sign up with EBS…

  211. 2checkout is good one for starting out

I am planning to develop one

  219. After reading all the posts, seems like Paypal is best (as it has no initial cost) for foreign payments made in foreign currencies, and may be CCAvenues for payments made in India in Indian rupees.

Now the question is Can I have both the payment gateways in my eCommerce site – Paypal and CCAvenues both options present??

    Any expert advice..

    • Dear Surajit
I am not an expert but yes you could use multiple PG simultaneously.

*No setup fees or low setup cost
    *Lowest TDR

*I don’t have to tie up with individual bank for providing their APIs.

I have just received a PPT from them. Haven’t received any TDR info. Once will get update soon.

  227. Good info… I wonder if you can also advise NGOs about which is the best service to accept donations/ membership fees online. We are a start-up – a registered trust – but don’t have income tax exemption yet (80g) although we have applied for registration with income tax (12a). However, I think people may want to donate to us and use our services despite not getting a tax exemption. But we would like easy processing, initial fees only preferably and easy tracking. Which service would you recommend for us?

    • Hi Sapna
I have gone thru your website but dont find any contact details like where are you located/ landline no. and apart from all this, providing credit / debit card processing option to NGO is very risky as no body could trace that where the donated money gonna be use and charge back are higher. Most of the 3rd party aggregator feel safe to provide Net Banking facility only. I would request to you kindly contact me at below details

  229. We are using CCAvenue & EBS Payment gateway services on our website. We are in web hosting market in India. and both payment gateways are good in service.

    • Dear Anand
I do agree that the names you have mentioned are good & well established as far as this particular industry is concerned. But i think you must agree that one of these charges quite higher transaction charges & other has less payment option (Net Banking) and has mixed opinion across Merchants. I would request you to kindly give us an opportunity to discuss further in this regard.

  230. Hi…

great to chance upon this blog, very useful info.

looking for the right recommended PG provider, our ecommerce solution is based on Joomla CMS + Virtuemart.

Transaction amount per unit is very high (>INR 10,000) so need 100% uptime, no denial of service and no fees on chargebacks. Any recommendations?

Also, any idea what PG does Flipkart.com now use? How about LetsBuy.com? How about SoSasta.com and Snapdeal.com? these four are pretty well-known web entities so whichever PG they use could be considered reliable, in my book!

    Thanks in advance, Vick

  239. Hi Guys,

Have you heard about Merchant Solutions, you should check out the website. They are an International Acquiring partners for Standard Chartered Bank. They have a larger market in Asia Pacific.

You could mail with more information to hewadewage.fernando@merchant-solutions.biz

P.S: They have their own policies, terms and conditions. Further they might take at least 10 days to provide the service. If your company can provide strong audited financials for last 3 years and web site meet the standard requirements set by them then you should not have any problem at all. Just to add they might wanna do a background check on your company too.

All of the above is just to make sure they are dealing with the right people and to safe guard the Merchants. Your own safety.

    So give it a shot.

  240. We are going to launch our website soon and are in search of a good payment gateway. Paypal is one which we have almost zeroed in for USD and Euro transaction. However for transaction in Indian Rupee we need a good reliable payment gateway. I have studied the whole blog and I feel ccavenue seems the best option.

Can any one tell us what kind of problems we may have to face when we have two payment gateways on our website.

  242. Rohit Dhingra

I am looking for Payment gate way primarily for foreign transaction. My nature of business is in countries like US, UK, Aust etc. I have tried EBS & Paypal. I faced issues from both these gateways

    1) EBS – Since 99% of my buyers have a credit card from their local bank i.e. US/UK etc their bank charges them a conversion fee from USD to INR or GBP to INR ….. which customers often protest…….

    2) Paypal – They do not have a seller protection for the services we offer and hence we end up paying charge-backs for no reason. Also it is difficult to find out the right person to reach for a quick resolution.

I hve tried ICICI was more or less closing on the deal…..and asked them 4 questions…. I am yet to receive an answer from them, however did get back to me with new discounted pricing.

Can anyone suggest that which payment gateway can i use when I have 90% of my transaction from foreign counteries

  244. I have a question to ask –

A website offers some e-payment options through a gateway. A person makes a payment request on the website, and hence gets connected to the payment gateway.

From the payment gateway, the request is processed to the bank. The bank does the basic checks at its end, and processes the request.

Now, at this point the user encounters some glitch in the system and the connection is broken from the gateway. The bank can not send any acknowledgement of the transaction to the gateway and hence the transaction should fail at this point.

Now, till what time will the gateway have the status of the payment as pending? and when will it get a confirmation that the transaction has failed?

    Thanks!

  245. Finally after a vast research i selected cc-avenue because our customers can use their SBI debit card with its ATM PIN number

  252. Paypal is by far still the most popular choice for small businesses in-spite of the recent restrictions placed on them by RBI. Between EBS and CCAvenue, I would recommend EBS because of the ease of using their interface. On the cost front nothing beats Paypal which has zero upfront fees.

    Here’s the thing:

We have a domain name registered for a matrimony website. The main market would be India. The partners for the venture are based in the US, and we need a payment gateway for our customers to be able to pay in Indian rupees.

The payment will need to be transferred to our account here, converted in US $ or in CA$.

I am wondering if I can get help or advice in this matter, esp in concerning the setup and the actual way it would work.

  260. payment gateway installation based on client requirement. i used ccavenue economy plan, if we have proper document ready, they will activate within 3 days. then u can integrate with their support.

ccavenue company name is Avenues, they have variety of plans like Event Avenue, hotel avenue, ticket avenue and more based on client need.

https://www.isgcon2011.com this particular domain integrated with Avenues ( ccavenue company) product called as Eventavenue , its just paying conference fees. its very easy to integrate and faster.

they accept creditcards, debit cards, netbanking, cash cards….

Request to all of you to be genuine and contact/ share details in case you really require PG services.

  269. Hey all,

I am a volunteer at an NGO. We recently got Payment Gateway up for accepting donations online. We have taken IDBI Bank’s payment gateway.

There per transaction charge was the least of all the offers we received @ 2.5%, The have one time setup fee and AMC. But we got lower fees and even AMC waiver as we opened some accounts and FDs in the bank.

They are providing PG to many govt.. institutions like BBMP, Bescom and colleges like IFIM.. Being a bank, its very secure and their integration with our site was also very easy and and its highly scalable and so far we had zero downtime..It accepts all vis-master debit and credit cards bt local and international.. and you receive credit to your account the very next day..

I feel its worth checking them out

    Cheers..

  278. Hey,

I am from India and my Bank Account and company setup is in India. The services that I want to sell are Online Marketing Services.

I have following requirements for a payment gateway:

    1. It should be able to process USD transactions.
    2. It should be able to process Recurring Payments.
    3. It should provide an API where I do not need to transfer the user to payment gateway site, and I have get the payment done on my own site.
    4. If it can provide a Virtual Terminal it would be a great addon.
    5. We also want to process PayPal Payments, and since with PayPal India we can’t do more than 500 USD per transaction I need a solution for that too. But may be I can skip paypal if I find a Payment Gateway which can agreen on all above 4 requirements and can process major Credit Cards – VISA, Master Card, AmEx.

Can anyone suggest the best suitable solution for my needs?

I talked to EBS, they are not doing AmEx Transactions as of now and they can’t even provide me an API to process transactions on my own website.

Looking forward to some decent suggestions.

    Thanks a lot.

    Nick

    • Hi , you can contact with HSBC-Global pay, they will provide secure PG. you may contact with Shohrat Karimi-HSBC- 9372455483,

Hope for international transaction u shld use international gateway like HSBC, because foreign customer know HSBC very well, so they are not hasitate to provide card details on website.

      Sak

      • Hey, thanks for the suggestion. Yes HSBC is very popular all over outside, but I think they will want me to redirect the visitors to HSBC Website which might not look that much professional to the visitors of my site. I was looking for some kind of merchant account provider which can process USD Transactions and also provide us an API so that I can integrate that on my website in a way that all the transactions happen on my website itself without the need of redirecting the customer to payment gateway site.

Also it should handle Subscription Payments/Recurring Billing.

Do you have any suggestion about that? Or anyone else has a suggestion about that? I would really appreciate it :)

        Thanks

  289. Hi All,

This thread has so much information! I’m with a small NGO that is trying to find a Payment Gateway that accepts both donations and sales (separately of course). Any ideas???

      • Atom is a poor company of cheap business ethics. I want to tell that hardly any customer of Atom Technologies is happy. Recently most of their staff quit.

What a shameless company it does not feel shy of eating away hard earned commission of it’s own reseller. Fuc*** company selling payment gateway in India.

First learn how to be honest with your resellers and customers. I want to see a company which is successful after ditching it’s own resellers. Same is Atom’s fate.

  290. Great post! Its helpful, is there any Indian site like PayPal or who do not charge hefty maintenance charge or yearly charge?

  291. Hi,

I am looking for PG for my website,
Is there any PG without any setup fees?

    Please suggest me one……
    THanks,

  292. CC Avenue is a worst service provider; they never care to help their clients if any technical error is occurred.

We got some technical issues with their gateway and sent them a lots of mails but no revert from their side, we escalated this issue to their higher management team like CEO, COO etc but no help.

We gone for their services around five years ago and realized that whenever we got any problem with their system they were not there to help us, they not even bother to revert to the mails, and finally we have de-activated CC Avenue from our website now.

  293. i am new to PG…saw all d comments… now fully confused :) … we wr half done with our website… yet to fix with the PG service provider…. from above it seems thr r lots of providers to end up with confusion…. our website is for international customers so if they do payment in dollar from US (say 1-5dollar) using debi/credit card will that can be directly creditted to our bank account here in india(say HDFC) or any saving bank account in indian rupees…???? if yes…then how much wld be the fees ? per dollar or per transaction????..plz clarify…thanks

    regards,
    kumar-india.

  294. Anyone experienced payu.in . How is their service

  295. I found http://www.transecute.com/pricing.htm to have the cheapest option for payment gateway.

Most other PG have annual maintenance charges + Set up fee + 4-7% per transaction. I dont think its wise to go with companies like this. cause if I am paying 24,000 + 2400 + 4% per transaction then it sums up to lakhs a year…

This is just my 2 cents… I saw bigrock.in using this service so know that this is a trust able service.

  296. Anyone experienced payu.in . How is their service

  297. Is there any payment gateway in India who does not take any setup fees. Or if they take, they cut the payments after the customer has paid. I heard there was one, but dont remember which one. Any advice??

  298. Rishit Khandelwal

We are sending CC Avenue a legal notice now. They are not providing technical support to us even they are not replying to our mails so just want to teach them a lesson.
They should be banned in India

  299. If any requirement for PG. Kindly contact us as we are much more competitive in the market. Feel free to contact on 98209 75595.

  308. Hello guys…..
I had tried PayPal to put in my website. I got my premier account verified by typing the tiny amount they credited to my Canara Bank account and integrated it. Created the pay button in my site and the product rate i gave as 1$ (As INR 50 option was not there). When I tried clicking it from my friends PC it showed everything proper. Showed the payment option(pay without Paypal Account) and my mail id and the debit card option too. Entered every details and pressed Pay. But..Showed some error that you cant make payment to India from outside. But Iam in India only right. Wont it work out in anyway with Paypal?Even if its in Dollars option? Is this the RBI problem??
    Kindly clarify this thing guys…
    Thank you

  309. Using PayPal is much easier than getting into the trouble of finding a Payment gateway provider. My friend once started a website with HDFC payment gateway and the kind of trouble he faced I can’t explain.

  310. We have been using CC Avenue. But I should admit that Set Up fee they are charging is totally irrational. Otherwise reliable.
Paypal is not at all reliable for sellers in particular.

  311. I paid up for the EBS gateway in Dec 2011. Facing serious problems in documentation. After sending me a list of documents required and accepting my setup fee, company has added another requirement of a very objectionable document on behalf of Citibank. They go back on their commitment after accepting the fee money. Am considering proceeding against EBS.

  312. Dear friends, I have a NGO called ADVENT TRust. I wish to know more about set up of EBS of AXIS or Payseal of HDFC. Is the any body who can guide me deteily for that.my mail id is adventindia@india.com

  313. I find EBS best option for start up online entrepreneurs.

  314. Payment gate ways for Indians? Amazon,Google check out ICICI which is the best.
Amazon the best,is only for US and UK but they are frank in this matter, when you try to signup it is displayed on the top of their website instead of wasting all your time looking for details to get their payment gateway.Google check out only available for US and UK will make you read their endless articles after articles cleverly taking you to links after links to click and read their never ending articles wasting lot of your time when finally you realize that all that knowledge you have acquired by wasting lot of your time was useless,In the mean time Google wants you to sign up know everything about you even your mothers maiden name and how many hairs you have on your body it will ask your bank account credit card nos and after you have given everything you realize it is only for US and UK.
ICICI is not suitable for small players who have a website working from home and want to sell one or two products. They need you should have a office that should be a registered firm in your Name centered in a good locality. After providing all this it is not sure they might or might not approve.

  315. I tried paypal and google checkout for http://www.camerocks.com and both are not accepting Indian payment.s

  316. Hey, have you explored a online processing system for your web-page? I have a amateur web-site and now i need a shop with payment product. I wanna use paypal. Please help me? Thanks.

  317. Raghavendra web solutions or onlinepaymentgateways.in are both scam companies runned by one fraud person, he scammed me of 200000 & more than 15 people like me as well. beware of such scammer.contact me on 09858336975 or email me at bilalahmad71@gmail.com

  318. Is it possible to have an Payment gateway in India which excepts rupees and other currency payments also..If yes, can i have name of that payment gateway?

  319. Hi. Just wanted to know can an individual also set up a payment gateway for his website, or do you mandatorily have to sign up as a company.

  334. What is the refund and chargeback attribute for ccavenu or ebs and you said that for intial setup ccavenu would be fine but for small office…is it would be fine..

  335. Hi,

It’s all about negotiations with these companies. We all know that TDR ranges between 2.25% to 7%. More the set up fee, lower the TDR. Every body wants to do business aggressively, so some time they compromise on setup fee as well as TDR. For an example, if company A is offering 2.5 % @ INR 30000.00 the competitor offers less set up fee.

It’s a game in PG industry. Merchant always require lower TDR for their business. Presence of pricing in website dose not make any difference to merchants. It’s all about negotiation skills. Start up merchants will always look forward lower set up fee, some time they compromise on TRD and few not.

I would recommend Zaakpay to all of you. It’s fresh & refreshing, with 50+ payment options on Net Banking platform. They also have International Card acceptance. Price is un-parallel among all players in the industry. They also have auto upgrade process of TDR based upon volume in INR.

    Check out: https://www.zaakpay.com/contact-us

  341. we are looking for payment gateway for our website for mobile/dth/datacard recharge.

suggest us best p.g charge less % coz in recharge margin are less

    • Hi,

Both the gateways are very competitive but if you compare the no of payment options then there is no comparison with CCAvenue. They are offering almost 99% banks available in India through which Net Banking is possible (Rough figure: 35-40 Banks). They are offering MasterCard, Visa Card, Amex, JCB and Dinner club’s Credit card options. They are having Zero downtime as they are associated with three payment gateways including Citibank and ICICI. They are offering very good Risk management system for reducing the charge-back issues. They have a complete Backend merchant accounting software helping in maintaining the accounts. SO i think the features that are mentioned above are more than enough to make the decision that which gateway is better.

Offering 50% Discount on CCAvenue Payment Gateway for more details visit http://www.ccavenuepaymentgateway.com
