If you are an Indian startup and you have an e-commerce component to your application, you will need to review, evaluate and shortlist a payment gateway that can handle online payments via credit and debit cards. And most likely this will not be an easy or fast process. In its current form, there are just a handful of payment gateway service providers in India. Access to information related to a few them is non-existent on the web.
I’m hoping that this post will help folks to do an easy and quick comparison between the various service providers.
Before we move on to the comparison, let’s consider some of the criteria that are important while evaluating a payment gateway:
1) Cost:
All payment gateways have an intial setup cost and then charge a small percentage of the transaction. Few have an annual maintainence cost (AMC) as well. The initial setup cost is a one time charge only and is mostly non-refundable. The annual maintainence cost is an annually recurring charge. The transaction cost (TDR) is charge per transaction and is generally anywhere between 4-7% of the transaction amount. The higher the volume, the more you can negotiate the transaction cost.
2) Support:
How helpful and responsive is the service provider when you run into a problem ? Do they provide off hours support ?
3) Chargeback policy and disputes:
What is the policy for chargebacks and refunds ? What is the policy for disputes ?
4) Ease of Integration:
Does the service provider provide an easy way to integrate the gateway into your app ? Do they provide alternate means for integration if tomorrow your architecture changes for some reason ?
Beyond these basic criteria, you’ll also need to consider additional factors (depending on your requirements) like – what credit cards / banks are supported by the payment gateway ? Do they provide mobile banking option ? What is their rate of successful transactions etc ?
One often raised point is why not use PayPal as your payment gateway ? After all, they provide a great API for integration, there are plenty of code samples already available and their rates are quite competitive.
Well, the reason why PayPal may not suit everyone’s requirements is because they do not provide you the option to charge customers in Indian Rupees. If using one of the PayPal supported currencies meets the requirements of your app, great. If not, you’ll need to consider using a payment gateway that will allow payments in Indian Rupees.
So, here’s a comparison of the major Indian online payment gateways (had to publish as a PDF since the spreadsheet wont fit on the blog). The list includes a comparison of CCAvenue, DirecPay (operated by TimesMoney group), EBS (collaboration with Axis bank), ABC Payments (operated by IndiaMart), HDFC, ICICI Payseal and Transecute.
The troublesome part of it was trying to locate the correct pricing plans for the various payment gateways, especially for DirecPay, HDFC and ICICI. DirecPay, HDFC and ICICI for whatever stupid reason choose not to list their pricing plans on their websites. You need to contact them via email or snail mail (ICICI) with your business details and only then, based on the nature of your business, transaction volume etc. do they send you a pricing plan. Sheer incovenience — I mean, so much ground work to simply get info on their pricing plans ? Its been 3-4 days since I emailed DirecPay and HDFC for details about their plans and am yet to hear back from them. I fail to see why they dont provide a simple price info on their website rather than to go through this archaic process.
The comparison document is by no means complete just due to the sheer difficulty in locating correct information on the web. I’m keeping this document ‘live’ – in the sense that if you have any input / update suggestions to add any additional payment gateway to the list or to update info related to any of the ones already listed in the document, please send them in to me and I will continue updating the document.
So which payment gateway should an Indian startup use ?
To begin with, you should obviously analyse the various payment gateways on some of the criteria that I listed above. On top of that, if you need to review data related to the success rate, average time to refund etc. for some of these gateways, I would suggest reviewing the statistics revealed by IRCTC – India’s biggest e-commerce site. They release monthly data related to transactions and payments, which includes how much each payment gateway contributed in terms of number of transactions, the amount contributed by each as well as the number of days to refund etc. For instance, only 53% of the transactions using the HDFC gateway completed successfully while ICICI gateway handled 17% of all the transactions that were done on the IRCTC website. The data also provides great insight into what are some of the main banks / debit cards being used by customers. For instance, 8.10% of all net banking transactions were attempted by ICICI customers while only 0.32% of all transactions were done by Bank of India customers.
Based on my research, if I were to use an Indian payment gateway today, I would personally go with either CCAvenue or EBS – for the simple reason that they make it very easy to get the needed information, have good online documentation and support wide range of credit/debit cards. In case of the other providers, its like a black hole – you try to seek out information and become a customer — and they try to make it that much harder to access that information.
If you have used / worked with and Indian payment gateway, I’d like to know how your experience has been ? If you were to recommend one to others, which one would it be ?

Pranav,
we use both direcpay & ICICI payseal.
your numbers are a little way-off in terns of transaction charges. But that might me since you looked them up via the web Vs talking to these guys.
direcpay – is great for its netbanking options / debit cards. they even power google ad words.
ICICI/ any direct bank – generally offers you lower transaction charges – and also greater control on what appears on your customer’s credit card statements to reduce charge backs.
payseal/ hdfc are big strong players & do have their policy’s / norms which one must adhere to – as they are very strict on the merchants business / profile. So the approval process does take months.
few things to keep in mind
you can also check out with atom technologies for IVR ( Interactive Voice Response ) based payment solution, which enables you to accept the credit card, debit card and prepaid cards payments over the phone without any manual intervation.
Tata Sky, Sun TV, Dish TV, Indiatimes Travel, Akabar Travels are using their platform… for processing payments over the phone.
dear Anant,
Tell me the procuder to get IVR…?
thank you.
Sharad,
I agree — the prices can definitely be negotiated — the info i have gotten is all from the web.
if the approval process for icici / hdfc ends up taking months, it doesnt really suit startups pretty well — does it ? It would basically mean either pre-plan and apply ahead of time or wait till the approval comes around.
-p
@Pranav
yes – its always helpful to pre-plan.
In our case we started up with Direcpay – quick n easy. While the application for ICICI was being processed.
Sometimes a 3% transaction charge diff ( 3% — Vs 6% CC avenues ) – might make a sea difference
Hey Sharad,
CCAvenue is charging us 2.75% accross all their 50+ options plus their IVR solutions.
Hi Sharad,
Hope you are having a great time. Is it possible for you to contact me personally. I need to talk to you regarding payment gateway.
I will be thankful to you if you do so.
Contact no : 9312109993
I have been recently discussing payment gateway solutions with http://www.development-india.com and they have assured me time after time that there are no transactional fees, annual fees – it is a one time set-up cost and that is all.
I was interested to know how this works, and is there a catch which I am not seeing??
Thank you
Thank you. this information is very useful to me,
So much of useful info. Thank you so much!
You probably missed a fast growing one – BillDesk. Quite a few companies (TataSky, Barclays, Vodafone etc ) are using it. I was strongly recommended to check them out due to their ease of integration and support.
isnt that for payments using net banking only ? I dont think there’s an option to pay by credit cards in their service.
Dear Pranav / Vivek,
Just an Update. Even i was thinking that Billdesk.com provides bank ECS based payment service for Post Paid bills.
But today when i checked with http://www.oxigen.com , i could find that some of the sections are powered by billdesk.com ((http://210.210.24.66/oxicash_instapay/index.htm) .
Hope that people who have used oxigen’s service will share their experience.
Thank You

Dear Pranav / Vivek,
I was personally using billdesk.com services for some time.
According to my understanding about billdesk.com, it requires an ECS mandate to your Bank Account for paying bills(mostly, if not all of Post paid category). We cannot use that for making ecommerce payments.
Normally service providers like Telecom companies, Utility companies & Insurance companies give their subscribers a facility to pay using separate ECS mandate in favour of each company. Instead, in billdesk.com, we give only one ECS mandate in favour of billdesk.com and it uses that ECS mandate for paying any number of service providers we choose. Of course as you know ECS mandate can be given for banks without net banking facility also.
Only advantage is that we are able to consolidate all our post paid bills.
One major disadvantage (personally faced by me) is that even though the billdesk’s due date is prior to the service provider’s due date, but due to delay in billdesk’s payment to service provider, the service provider normally charges fine for our payment (which we might have made to billdesk.com before the actual due date).
In conclusion, billdesk.com = one ECS Mandate = Many service providers(Mostly post paid type). It’s is not an Online payment gateway.
Thank You

@Anant: You have already mentioned once about your company above. Why spam such an useful post by useless repetitive references to your service?
What if one wants to collect dollar payments in India (via credit cards) ? Are there any options apart from CCAvenue ?
use Paypal if you want to collect dollar payments in India
@Pranav: In the light of new mess that paypal has created.. What are the options for creating dollar payments in India? I see ccavenue has an option. What about others?
Thanks Pranav for this info ..Great job !!
which gateway can be used if we also want DEBIT card payment .. ?
which among the above [players give the service with least transaction charge… ?
and how does integrating more than one merchant gateway works …?
nikhil,
most of the payment gateways support net banking (debit cards). However, few may provide support for additional banks than others.
Why would you want to integrate more than one merchant gateway ? Its more headache from all aspects – technical, financial, management etc. Doesnt make a lot of sense to have multiple gateways for small to medium ecomm sites.
Hi Nikhil,
The VISA elctron debit cards of 12 banks are accepted on any credit card payment gateway..technically a debit card transaction is same as credit card.
Dear Nikhil,
HDFC Bank provides an interface for accepting Debit cards too, along with the Credit cards on its sole Payment Gateway interface itself, additionally by giving its users (Cardholders) the necessary notification on the paypage that Debit cards are also accepted, but only the ones which are Visa and MasterCard ENROLLED i.e., in accordance with the RBI rule.
1. Which of these payment gateways support mobile payments?
ccavenue does. I think ebs also does support mobile payments.
CCAvenue do not supports mobile payment. They had not even started yet.
What Bullshit, Joby. CCAvenue has PayMate and SBI freedom as mobile payment options for the last three years. They also have CCAvenue PhonePay, which is a very good IVR solution that we are using for the last couple of months for our memberships collections on phone. The best part is that they are giving it free with every ccavenue account. Its a brilliant package with 50+ payment options, free merchant account, free risk management, no chargeback representation fees, free IVR etc. They are worldclass and no other PG comes remotely close to their offerings or service. Regards, Abhijan.
No, ccavenue supports mobile payment option
Hi,
I have a query. I understand that I need payment gateway if I want to accept payments through credit card etc. But in net banking, if I have given my account information then the customer can login to his bank account (on his bank site) and can transfer funds to my account. I think no gateway is required at my site for this.
Is it like that the customer will be able to login to his bank account through my site hence the payment gateway is required?
Please clarify.
Regards
Manish
Dear Manish,
If your website requires automatic transaction information for processing customer’s orders, then you will require payment gateway. Also you cannot expect all your customers to have net banking enabled bank account in the same bank as yours.
If you don’t require automatic transaction information for processeing customer’s orders, then you can ask your customer to deposit the amount either at a branch of your bank(some banks provide facility for cash deposit in any branch without any charges) or net banking transfer or through NEFT (Just costing around Rs.5/- for a transaction). And customer can send the payment infomation via email/your website & you can process the order.
This type of manual processing of transaction will save websites/customers the exorbitant transaction charges collected by payment gateways. I found that some publishers were offering this method apart from net banking coupled with a manual way of processing the orders

Hi,
I don’t understand fully the problem with paypal. Yes, you can charge only in USD or Euro, but once the Indian customer is going for payment through paypal, the foreign currency gets automatically converted in Indian Rupee, so it;s not that you can not use paypal in India. Of course you should explain your customer what is gonna to happened and it could be a problem for some projects, but for example hotel service is not a problem, if the customer “pays” in USD.
Regards
Andre
Re PayPal , They will process orders in foreign currency which the customer’s credit card gets charged to. However the real issue is how does PayPal deliver the money to vendor/affiliate’s Indian account? Their terms and conditions do not even mention India in their list of countries. I would not be surprised if this pertains across the board.
Thanks for raising the issue.
There is one more company which has deep expertise in providing Payment Gateway option over the Phone ( IVR ). The Name of the Company is One 97 Communication Pvt. Limited. It is noida based company and have many Corporates & Enterprise Clients in their kitty. The Charges are very much affordable as comparison to the other Companies offering the same Product.
their Transaction charges are also very less.

Can any body provide me the list of companies providing Payment Gateway option over IVR?
As i have urgent requirement for my Organization.
Try CCAvenue PhonePay Ivr systems. It ha sthe largest bouqet of payment options on IVR. It processes MC, Visa, AmEx, JCB, Diners, ITZ cash, Paymate and SBI freedom bank accounts on the IVR. Best part is you can also use the same CCAvenue account for you website.
Hi Himanshu,
just saw your posting on IVR for payment. not sure if its too late. Our IVR payment solution is PA-DSS certified and can integrated with any third party Gateway. It is suitable for Credit/Debit/Pre-Paid Cash Cards.
If you are interested please email me at rraghavan@baytalkitec.com.
thanks
Raghu
Hi Himanshu
I know 2 companies who are providing Payment Gateway Option over IVR, 1,Atom
2. One97 Communication
Atom is based at Mumbai, and One97 Communication is based at Noida.
I personally called them up for my requirement, and found One97 communication better in terms of Rates and quality, as One97 is specialised in Developing IVR. You can talk to Abhishek Khurana of one97 Communication @ 09910171197.
ONE97 Site talks about turnkey development of VAS for telecom companies. I did not see anything on IVR and credit card payment. did i look into the wrong website?
Visit Paytm.in
One97’s M-Commerce site.
hi! i recently came across a payment gateway called Upclick (www.upclick.com) which charges NOTHING on transactions less than $40 and incrementally over that.
Have you guys heard anything about that so far?
Also, what has been the user experience so far in the Indian gateways so far?
Hi,
I just want to know which is the better option between CCavenues and EBS. EBS has much better rates than ccavenues still I see ccavenues more on e-commerce websites. Why is it so ?
CCAvenues gives you more netbanking facilities and Credit card options than any other PG. And the customer base of CCAvenues is about 60% merchants in India.
See i would suggest not to take instant decision since there are many company into such business. The one i know is One97 Communication Pvt. Ltd. Best part with this is they provide payment gateways both on web and IVR. Which is a necessity for collecting credit card payments by an agent in call center then and there. You can contact neelam@9717011060.
I would like to know, is there any payment gateway where I can initiate a credit/debit card transaction between two different parties i.e. I will neither be the seller nor the buyer.
NJ, become a reseller of any of the Payment gateway Provider. Then you dont have to be either a seller or a buyer.
For remitting USD as membership fees, apart from transactions through credit card or bank demand draft is there any facility for payment through banks or otherwise, from India.
Hi
My business is railway booking, through IRCTC. Tell me, is there any cash card/credit card/debit card, banks, is not charged any extra charges on booking railway E -tickets. Can any body provide me information?
Yes… use SBI IRCTC Card. No transaction will be deducted
I use AMEX gateway with my ICICI credit card for online rail ticket booking. They dont charge any transaction fee.
Thanks,
Pawan
hey guys i did a small study on payment gateways for my site. happy to share my compilation. check it out @ http://thetopslot.blogspot.com/2009/06/indian-payment-gateways-my-search.html
your link is not working, can you please update it???
thanks
Will u pls update ur link
We currently have tieups with ICICI and CC Avenue. The service of ICICI is very poor. With a useless team as HelpDesk and non responsive dumbo as relationship manager , It will be better to commit suicide than to commit ur business with ICICI
Yes you are right…. their pgheldesk sucks. They dont even know what they talk and are not even aware of the errors. It took me two months from sign up to intergration because of their sloppy sales and support team
Dear Pranav,
We have a small Charitable trust run out of the money from our pocket and some local sponsors. We would like to scale up the activities in the areas of Medical facilities, Education, infrasturcture and clothings for slums and poor urbans.
In this respect we thought of having a payment gateway to enable our well wishers in India and outside to donate through our website. As you understand that stiff initial charges, transaction or insecurity may hurt the cause of this organisation, I request your suggestions for the right gateway for this.
Sandip
Sandip,
Did you get an answer? hope you have found the right one. Many websites provide a separate pricing plans for NGOs.
Hi Friends,
I want to set up the on-line credit card payment for my client. Upon research I thought the CCAvenue is the best one for on-line payment gateway. Is this is correct or is there any other better choice. Also, can anyone tell me how to set up this in our application. How can we test our application for this functionality? I tried that in the Paypal which provides us with the sandbox in which we can create the test accounts and test our development call through APIs. But is this possible in the case of CCAvenue. Does the CCAvenue has the APIs to be called from our application or is there any other way to call the on-line payment gateway (if so, can anyone kindly let me know the procedure to integrate in our application).
Thanks in advance.
Dont go with CCAvenue. A lot of their CC transaction fail unnecessarily. They are very frustrating.
Dear ravi
many times bank credit cards billed unnecessarily so what you say that please don’t go with any bank, my dear try to understand that this is a technology and any time it can make any trouble but the thing is that is ccavenue, any bank or any company who is working in technology is supporting for their customer or not, i am running my company from 2001 and have faced a lot of troubles in many fields like with banks, data centers, mobile operators etc. but its not means that all is useless, many time lots of problems happened due to our some mistake, but nobody want to accept that this is their mistake too, now come to point of ccavenue , i am reseller of ccavenue and also i have made payment on ccavenue payment gateway marchant many times, and yes this is correct that some time this type of problem come but at any time when i have contacted with ccavnue for resolve the issue so they have cooprated with us and arrange a refund of the wrong transaction done but yes it takes some time upto one month
//Dont go with CCAvenue. A lot of their CC transaction fail unnecessarily. They are very frustrating.//
very true…
i have visited paytm.in
A mcommerce site, they talk about services they can provide to Operators & Enterprises. But they dont talk about Their charges.
Can any body let me know what are their charges for IVR P.G.?
Thanks

hi Neha ,
We are also planning for payment Gateway , I am planning for EBS, what do you say , What are you using now. How is your business going on.
Hi Guys
Kindly get in touch with me at 99821 33333 for any IPG services at Rajasthan & UP.
We can provide IPG services from Merchant Solutions which is a Joint Venture between FDI & Standard Chartered Bank for Asia Pacific.
First of all, fantastic info here. Secondly, all the companies that I’ve spoken to that use CCAvenue are not happy with their service nor their support. Direcpay from Times of Money seems like a good option currently.
Hi Seb,
Thats a big statement to make considering more than 90% of Indian websites use CCAvenue PG services. Can you let us know as to which of the merchants whom you have spoken has expressed their unhappiness….or are you just a troll trying to defame them. We are using them for last 7 years and are absolutely satisfied with them. They offer an unbeatable brilliant package with 50+ payment options, free merchant account, free risk management, no chargeback representation fees, free IVR etc. They are worldclass and no other PG comes remotely close to their offerings or service.
Would appreciate if you could list out your contact details as when I click on your link it goes to an american website called virtualloan.com. Will await your reply. Regards, Abhijan.
90% payments done thru CC avenue????? put correct facts dude…CC avenue doesnt have any big name

Can I register for multiple Merchant accounts through a single Website/Portal/Entity.
Idea is to link multiple manufacturers directly to their customers through a portal ? Can this be done ? or does it require the website to hold a merchant account and thereby re distribute the money ?
Dear Sir ,
This is Rahul Bhardwaj from Noida. I’m truely interested in making one online thirdparty payment gateway, being a web developer and network administrator, I really felt I can do or something I can go for a third party payment gateway.
I didn’t get any answer from people, users who are acutally working on this kind of projects or had been working, till date. and rusty search engines only giving fake articles these days.
I think my question may need more clarification…
I am talking about creating/becoming a service such as PayPal,Authorize.net,EBS, Direcpay or CCAVENUE….
So plz mail me as soon as possible.
I’d really appreciate If you come forward and provide some information which will be useful for me.
Thank You.

Rahul Bhardwaj

Have you made any progress in this direction so far? If you like, I’ll also be interested in discussing this with you.

This site is truly informational indeed.
I’m an American and was wondering how difficult would it be if I wanted to open a PSP and a PCI compliant gateway in India? How much does it cost and so forth if I want to use the PSP for US based businesses. I’ve spend a ton of time and money talking to “expert professionals” in India, who’ve just taken me for a ride. I’m looking for competent professionals who can help me with this project. I’ll be checking this often so please drop me a message.
I could be reached at +1-573-253-1223
Hello,

Thanks
Dear Kishore,
Mail me your number on rahulbhardwaj_18@yahoo.com
I’ll tell you everything…
Thanks.
Hi , After browsing through all of these I am still greedy for an easy and straight answer
I run a very small charitable trust and would like to accept donations/subscirptions via the website.
Ofcourse I would like it to be extremely economical and can compromise on a few features ( like using only Debit Card if that brings down the cost)
I would also very reluctant to pay the cost per transaction- especially since this is the donors money, and we take pride in being a zero overhead organization now.
Thanks a lot …… Any response will be more than welcome

Dear Sir ,
This is Rahul Bhardwaj from Noida.
Thank You.
Regards,
Rahul Bhardwaj
Hi,
What is the difference between oxigen and CCAvenue??
If both do payment gateway – why should i choose one over other?? any insights will be great. thanks,

Sorry, had not checked this blog for some time and I do not receive any emails. For Charity work with NGOs, we’ll try to work with you and arrange the best available rates provided that these are real charities. Currently we are working on couple projects where we allow people in US to send money to India for a specific cause through their bank account. Credit/Debit/other options can also be added if someone is interested. I may be able to connect you to some organizations here who could be helpful to real charities. Send emails directly to uladdha@indiapay.com with detail information about your charities and what you do and what you need. Thanks.
Dear Unmesh,
Hi, we have one jobsite which is functional from 2007 but we need the payment gateway integration for our site for which we can only pay startup fee upto Rs.3000, I feel, you can help us in this context and we can partner with you by keeping your banner on our site and we can also offer you the 20% of each transaction that a customer did on our site. I hope, this can help us mutually. You can reach on sindhwin@yahoo.co.in

Does anybody know which of these payment gateways works with online dating.
Apparently CCAVenue and EBS don’t work with dating companies.
Majority of Indian payment gateways have a lot of disintegrated platforms like some use cards, some use internet and some use mobile when it come to the common man all these are still not feasible hence a unified system like what is there in US / Singapore etc needs to be coming in India to make payment gateways accessible to common man “aam admi”.
Not a long way to go our technological companies are doing great we have to wait little to get good features to enjoy.
I would like to continue a trail on my blog: http://thomassjacob.wordpress.com
as this topic is going to be interesting ….

Tom
Hey,
I had a really bad experience with Direcpay / TimesofMoney. Very unprofessional setup, no decent customer support.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that timesofmoney will be good since they are of times group.
Still looking for a decent Payment Gateway.
Dear Shyam,
Only, if at all your platform is on either ASP, ASP.Net only in case if you yourself are liable for the required ASP to .Net migration OR JSP, I would sincerely suggest you to opt for HDFC gateway. Pricing, am not much sure whether it is economical, but technically the overall integration is quite simple and short and the support team there i.e., PGHelpdesk is very much dedicated and sincere towards support.
Note: The integration if worked on by going thru the provided user manual OR else with the help of the helpdesk team, can surely be done withinn just a few hours, i.e., a track record of 37 mins has been registered for completion of integration using pure ASP.
Hi Shyam
Can you suggest me which payment gateway is good? i tried with PayPal but it is not well develop in India.
Can you please share with me your experience?
Many thanks

I am starting a eBusiness in India, I want to know is ccAvenue the best out of it? Can they take China payment like Alipay/ PaymentAsia? If so I will just go for one provider instead of applying for all. Also can they do offshore settlement? I tried to contact a few but yet to get a response from it.
Just find out that IndiaPay is Not PCI-DSS Certified. They are CISP which is Visa USA’s Card Information Security Program; which is not used in Asia-Pacific.
CISP is VISA and PCI is the industries standards committee for credit card security. In a few months, CISP will disappear and everyone will need to meet PCI requirements. The certification process is an annual process.
CCAvenue, One97 Communication (PayTM), Atom Tech are some of the Providers who are PCI-DSS certified.
I dealt with all of them & found One97 more competitive & Services are good too.
Back in Feb 09 i had to make the decision to choose a payment gateway for our ecom business (we are into web hosting). It was not so much a difficult decision as the choice was so limited, from my research the only 2 contenders were ccavenue and ebs. The rest either did not disclose pricing info or they did not want to entertain startups. I kept hoping paypal or google payment would start taking INR payments but that has not happend till now, i guess govt red tape stuff. Anywyas long story short and i went to CCavenue. The paper work was a lot to get the merchant account and we never got credit card facility (which i did not even want) but the experience has been good so far. The payment is on time and the gateway works good. Though they really need to change the payment page, looks like it has been the same since 10 years.
Hi Prashant,
I ask this question after reading your comment… we have been using ccavenue for more than 2 years now… but of late, more than 50% our of clients face ‘transaction failure’ and the transaction doesnt get complete. I would like to know if you , or anyone else in this forum face this problem??
Thanks
Great Article. I am in a process of evaluating a Payment Gateway from my startup and this article is a GodSend.
Thanks A Ton.
Hi all,
Just thought that I would mention another Payment Gateway that has been operating in India for a few years now. Merchant Solutions (technology provided by DPS – Direct Payment Solutions) offers all credit card/debit card/mobile payments/recurring token billing/customizable hosted payments pages for full PCI compliance in INR. We are partnered with the Standard Chartered Bank in India and support all development platforms.
We already have numerous merchants throughout India using the system successfully and some major telecommunications providers coming on board soon.
I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have – sam.ling@paymentexpress.com
I read the article I got much information

I saw another comparison which rates transecute very highly.
I was about to finalize however a rough comparison indicate that they charge very high ie 7.5% for every transaction worth 1000.
a few things …..if clarified i will really be grateful
1) Any alternative to CCavenue with less commission % and similar range of features.
2) My site is going to be commercial one similar to xtees one, (select –> add to cart –> check out) how does ‘Payment on delivery’ mode works, does the courier company take care of the collecting and handing over the amount from the customer or its usually ‘in house’ home delivery solution.
3) If I incorporate CCavenue or any other decent gateway , is the ‘order tracking’ mechanism seamless and the gateway company handles it or , I have to tell my develop to build a separate module for order tracking and chasing.
Any help suggestion ( in point wise manner) is appreciated
thanks in advance
cheers,
Akash

Hello,
We have started our website http://www.rechargeguru.com for providing mobile & dth recharge for prepaid connections in India.
We are using paypal. As all know that paypal.
Recently around mid of December we have tied with
ebs.in payment processor. There support team is quite well efficient. But just be attentive when u make call to them regarding the Sign-up & integration charges.
There are some loop holes. So be clear and get every thing in written via email.
Will share more experience in coming days. If u have any query please email me.
Regards
Apurv.
Hi Apurv,
read your comment about EBS.in – we were shortlisting that for our india website. Anything specific you can share regarding the lopp holes in their proposal?
Thanks for your help.
SID
Hello,
We have got our first payment from ebs.in 12 days back.
But still 45 days has passed they have not activated other banks payment system and visa credit card payment system on our website http://www.rechargeguru.com
There are some loop holes, please keep all email records with u every time you are going to call them.
For now my first experience i will rate 5 out of 10. Where 10 is for best, marks are cut because credit card interface not activated.
Regards
Apurv.
Dear Apurv
Thank You to share your experience with us. I am also using paypal but they are unable to transfer my money to my indian bank. Also cheque time is around 60 days.

Hello All,
I have been going through all the post and thought I could make some contributions to the same.
We have been using Payseal (ICICI), Billdesk and PayPal gateways connected with our sites. Let me assure you that there are no companies in India which are of good standards with support and service. You need to have your own tech team to do research and get rid of the glitches.
As for the commercials, the best suited would be ICICI with their payment processing fees in the 2.5-3% segment and setup in the region of 20K to 30K. You can always negotiate if you have large volumes.
You must also keep in mind that since debit cards can be processed on these gateways there is no real or pressing need to have NetBanking facilities bcos if you have a bank account, you do have a ATM-Debit card for sure. So no real need of going to 3rd party aggregators for netbanking.
Even with regards to economy, I would always suggest to have a direct merchant account with the banks as they are very competitive and even if you are processing 5 lacs annually you will be saving the setup fees which you are paying them as compared to any aggregator.
Integration wise, AXIS is the easiest as it does not require any DLL or extra installation on the server as with other banks this will lead to you buying a virtual dedicated server at an extra cost.
BillDesk does provide some really good options and their payout mechanism etc is also smooth. You might want to check if the setup cost suits you.
A cost analysis would be as follows :
Direct Merchant Account from Banks :
Setup – Rs. 25K – 50K
Transaction Cost – 2.5% approx.
3rd Party Aggregators:
Setup – 5K – 25K
Transaction Cost – 3.5%-7% approx (whoops)
PayPal :
Setup – Rs. 0
Transaction Cost – 3.9% + 0.15 cents (dont forget that if you convert from foreign currency to INR then 3% is charged extra for currency conversion rate)
Finally, I would suggest that either go in for PayPal or get yourself a direct merchant code from ICICI, AXIS or HDFC bank.
Hi Cherag
Thank you to share your experience with us.
I am having problem with PayPal as they are not transfer money into my bank. Even the cheque time is around 60 days or more. I receive payment through credit cards from my international customer.

Could you please share with me any red flags to watch out for with Billdesk.
Also, any loopholes in terms of coordinating the integration with them would be helpful.
Hope to hear from you.

Hello,
It will be good if paypal start accepting INR. Because we can use same paypal account on multiple websites.
If you are buying online regularly then also it makes sense using paypal.
Paypal Fees 3.4% and not setup costs. Compare with Indian payment gateways you will see the difference.
2CO also allow INR. bUt minimum payouts have to be Rs.1,00,000/-
Thankyou,
DEVANG

Hi,
I accept almost 30,000 USD each month from US, UK and other countries. I was using paypal but having a problem from few days as they have stopped payment from personal paypal accounts from client.
I was anyway planning to change them since they send money to India in INR and not Forex . Also their conversion rate is very bad.
What are the options to accept foreign currencies of this volume. Shall I go to an India provider like ccavenue, icici, axis bank or hdfc or international like authorize.net or 2checkout etc
Please advise. I want to get money in India in USd and then get local concersion rates.
Please advise and thanks for help.

Dear all,
Good job done…very well knitted and informative thread.Though lot of deliberations and PoVs have been discussed and raised in this thread.
Still the doubt looms large as to which is the best PG that can stand best at all the discussed parameters of :
1. Customer service
2. TDR charges
3. Set up cost
4. Annual maintenance cost
5. Other cost of quality
Please correct me if i’m wrong but my guess says the answer to this question is none,as it us as a new start up that needs to decide which PG is best suiting to our requirements in terms of 1. No. of expected transactions 2. Type of API support 3. Continuity of services on the basis of f/bs provided
I shall be using it for my business in wellness industry……..all the best for the search
I have a requirement where I need to support
Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Online accounts, Visa, Master, Maestro for of my client application. Initial and recurring cost also must be minimal.
Which service would be better for me.
You can go for any payment Gateway Service provider for that.
Bank of Baorda is in the process of setting up a Payment Gateway. You can contact them at ipgot.bcc@bankofbaroda.com to get the TDR rates and the charges.
i got payment from overseas into my paypal account . but could not get into my bank account…..please advise me ….i sell online
regards
i have just mailed to two of the solution providers, lets look at the response and decide.
This dscussion has been very informative and healthy, do keep up the good work.
Glad to revisit this page. There are some factually incorrect comments from Aakash above which I like to correct. IndiaPay is completely PCI compliant and has level 1 certification being certified on annual basis at not only with PCI-DSS but also SAS70 which is much more stringent than PCI. PCI Level 1 means our platform process more than 10 million transactions a year. Our volume for 2009 was approx 450 million transactions including US, EU, Asia and other regions. There are 22 processing networks connected to our platform including Visa, MS, Amex etc. There are 40 banks or financial institutions talk with the gateway across the world. There is simply no other provider in India matching this depth. We process Credit, debit, ACH (ECS, RTGS, NEFT), Paper Cheques and Gift/Loyalty transactions. Our API allows developers to code interface in Java, .Net, PHP, CGI, C++, SOAP/XML web services. The usual development time is not more than few hours for experienced developer for all above types of transactions. Front end which could connect to includes Physical POS system (ATM, Kiosk, Cash Registers, Various Card swipes and terminals) , Web, Mobile, IVR, Software ( ERPs like SAP, Oracle, accounting systems like Tally and Quick Books). More than 150 shopping carts have direct plugins to our systems. You can simply integrate all of these payment mechanisms into any of your hardware, software or mobi/IVR applications using the extensive API which is already built in. We promote our resellers and incentivize them by providing best TDR and lowest transaction fee possible to their merchants/users. Major difference with other players and IndiaPay is payment consolidation which provides all payment channels in one single pipe.
Right now you can accept
1. Credit/Debit cards from across the world and not just India.
2. Direct debits/Remittances from US, EU and China customers from their bank accounts.
3. ECS/RTGS/NEFT/Direct debit payments from any Indian bank account holder.
4. Paper checks – American and Indian.
Feel free to drop me a line and I can provide you the integration manual.
Rgds,
Unmesh

Indian payment gateway really needs to improve by miles, having said that in the current stage one has 2 options:
1) Go with the banks (HDFC, ICICI)
They charge from 2% to even 5 or 6% based upon how much you are willing to spend.
But be ready to serve them with number of painful documents, and in some cases you might also be asked to place in a fixed deposit in the bank ranging from 1 to 5 lakhs.
Positives –
Comparatively better customer service,
Relatively quick transfer of funds to your account
Lesser per transaction cost (This also depends on your negotiations with the bank)
Negatives –
Lots of documentation and a lengthy process
Increase in investment due to requirement of fixed deposit (in some cases)
In some cases banks offer relatively lesser avenues of payments (like no option is available for payment through mobile, certain banks debt card and internet banking)
2) 3rd party vendors (Timeofmoney, CCAvenue)
Their per transaction fee ranges from 3.5% – 7% while the cost of procurement of the service will range from 7,000 to about 40,000.
Positives –
Quick process, not as many documents or fixed deposits required
Large avenues for funds transfer available, as these vendors have tied up with number of banks.
Negatives –
Poor customer service
Long lag period in transferring of funds to your account (ranging from 1 to 2 weeks)
Higher per transaction cost
PayPal currently is not an option for the Indian vendors, as the USD funds are not permitted to be transferred in Indian currency due to certain issues raised by RBI.
So make a wise decision considering all the pros and cons.

Can anybody suggest a PG with a good track record and low rate of charge for the transaction?
Rishi

Hi,
I am looking for a gateway which is economical as well secure for the transaction supporting currencies -Dollar/Indian Rupee
Hi Sharad,
whizPay is one of the solutions for you.
rather interesting thread. very useful for startups, we think.
I have gone through the all the comments ,however no one seems to concern about the chargback issue. I hope whatever payment gatway is used it seems no one has read the fine prints of agreement.
The payment gatway will debit the merchant immediately on any chrageback request whether you have delivered the product even after two months also . Recently we have a case wherin the order placed in January was executed in time and materail delivered to party in Jan itself however we were shocked to see that payment gatway has put the chargbeack in March 30th for the tran done in Jan and debited our a/c. When we contacetd them we were asked to see the agreement and as per the agrement merchant will be debited immediately . L ater provide the Proff of delivery , order details etc to take up the case with Master/Visa network. we awere aslo told by gateway that these are card used fraudulatenly by someone and now actual card holders has filed complain to their card issuing bamk in turn issuing bank has sent to master visa and they debited paymant gateway and in turn mechant is debited.
As the card details is given by the customer in the payment gatway only and there are 3 d secure or 3rd layer of security check etc at the time of authntication of tran by the gatways why the merchant should be penalised for this. As merchant only give delivery of servicers/material based on the credit given by payment gatway and have by no means knowing that the card is used is not fradualtenly aquired by the person. We were told that all banks are govrned by the Master /Vise rules in India. I have cheked even the ccavenue has this clause in the agreement and for tran done through stolen card/information the merchant will be debited immediately.
So I request all of you to read the fine print of your agreement with the payment gatway and talk to your payment gatways service provider and try to understand the chargback issues. I still feel that merchant is at the reciving end in this process as they have no means to know that customer is using his own card for the transaction or the fradualtely stolen card.
I would also like to know if any one has solution for this and any payment gatway in India who does not penalise merchant for no fault of them.
Hi NS,

hi ,
i am about to launch my website with one of the payment gateways, looking at the above comments, it seems really difficult, rather impossible to get ccavenue for us “sole proprietors” they say it like its a bad thing ..so the only option seems like EBS or Directpay. the person designing my website managed to get a reply from direct pay, where their rates are like almost exactly the same as EBS . So here im confused…which one should i go for? im nt sure if tie ups with several banks like ccavenue is a criteria for judging ebs n all ? can someone please help ….both ebs and directpay are known so i dnt know what to really look at here
Hi Pallavi,
You can try with whizpay also. (www.whizpay.net)
go with a bank

wow.. what an amazing thread of information.
I felt I just got my 101 on payment gateways. thank you.
I am an ngo looking for a payment gateway to accept donations world-wide. From my reading this entire thread, it seems the options available in India are:
1. Indiapay
2.One97
3. Merchant Solutions
4. EBS
5. Talentbeat
I will contact all of them to see who offers the best deal and share it with all of you here. I can be reached at 98103 88843.
Thanks to the person who started this.
Kind regards,
Helen

We are still contemplating which one to use…Although finalised on going with CC Avenue now m confused after reading the comments…please guide.
Aditya
Hi aditya,
its better to go with a bank.reach me at 9940022984
Would look forward to Helen’s exploration and learn from the experience. Looking for an online payment gateway provider in India.
Regards,
Venkat
Hi All,
I called up a few of the payment gateway options and this is what I got. I asked in terms of an NGO.
- Indiapay – They seemed professional and had special rates for NGOs. They charge about 3% per transaction. They currently do Cleartrip.com.
One97 Communication – They charge about Rs30,000 as a start up payment and then its 2.75% per transaction
EBS – They said they dont do NGOs so we did not speak further
Merchant Solutions – he said an ngo had to be etablished for three years before they would consider us so we did not speak further.
Talent Whiz – They also sounded quite professional and have different tiers of payments. They sounded professional as well.
As an NGO, I would go for Indiapay. The only thing is if I would fit into their profile or not.
I wanted to ask if anyone had any recent experiences with Paypal in India. I am hearing a lot of mixed reviews. Would really appreciate it if someone could let me know.
thanks,
Helen
I am planning to open a sub-broking outfit for stock market trading for my clients, i want my clients to transfer fund onloine to my bank accoutn as they trade.
How do i go about it?
hi reach me at 9940022984 i will help you out.
I’m also getting mixed reviews about paypal and have been trying to apply with Indian payment gateways to put on my site. Because I am in Australia, I can’t seem to find any Indian payment gateway that would allow me to trade. Do I need to open an Indian bank account or something? Helen have you regsitered with Indiapay. Has it worked?
Hi Arvind,
I haven’t registered with Indiapay as yet. I have opened an Account with Kotak Mahindra and they have assured me that they will offer me a payment gateway service. I don’t quite believe them, and once my account is opened next week, will have a clearer idea of it.
I actually got an email from paypal saying that they have legal and regulatory restraints in India so I can’t use them as an NGO. Not too sure if it works for commercial enterprices.
You could sign up with them, its free, and see what they email back to you.
My experience has been that the best way for any info is to call up the company directly. Talentbeat is a mobile number and someone picks up immediately and so is Indiapay, so you don’t waste a lot of long distance money being put on hold.
Hope that helps..
Helen

Hello Anurag,
I believe setting up third party payment gateway would be the easiest both in terms of software integration and paperwork involved initially. I would suggest look at EBS and ccAvenue in detail. I have created a list of points that may help you zeroing down on one of the options. Here is the link
http://www.friendsofbooks.com/blog/top-ten-questions-for-payment-gateways
Thank you,
Manish
ok so here is the issue …
cc avenue seems to be good..but has something against sole proprietors……. i have contacted them lets see their response if this is really true..
then comes direct pay….they want you to upload your website, go live and then after 15 days or so they will consider the application.. so basically i would have to upload an e commerce website without an option to sell……. they will take their own sweet time to consider after maybe people think my website is useless…
now come to ebs . they responded really fast and were totally ready to start the process..(really fast i mean i got a call and an email within an hour) they were like not even ready to wait for me to consider ..which made me feel a bit wierd…
i would want to know if anyone is using ebs, i mean are they good ? their tie ups are less considering cc avenue or direct pay. and im running out of time.
what to do ?
for satish
taking a bank payment gateway,
i contacted my own bank hdfc, their system was relaly wierd.. they wanted me to be running my business for like atleast 2 years prior to opening the website, plus they wanted an fd for about 10 lakhs to be made against a payment gateway. it makes it almost impossible to go for..maybe any other banks are might be not this unreasonable ..what would u suggest then
Hello Pallavi,
ccAvenue paperwork does seem daunting, but is usually not an issue. We were able to get an account as sole proprietors. EBS is also good, and yes, they are prompt.
Manish
hi manish,
so you are using cc avenue then or ebs ?
I have never used CCAvenue before. I have always used ICICI and found it very nice. Good customer service and timely response. No problems so far.
But I will surely give CCAvenue a try as well.
Also, I wasnt aware that IRCTC provided details of transcations. This is really good.
Hi Farhat,
Thanks for giving us your valuable feedback. We are glad to provide excellent services to all our customers.
Regards,
ICICI Bank Customer Service Team.
Hi Pallavi,
We are currently using ccAvenue.
Manish
Someone said paypal can be used in India…. I am launching my business and website newly and don’t want to spend thousands and lakhs just to get a payment gateway.
From my understanding and what I learn from above comments about paypal
PROS:
Paypal is free to start (no setup fees)
Easy to integrate in websites with lots of APIs and examples available
CONS:
INR payment is not possible in paypal
Other then some 3-4 % transaction fee, I also need to pay some 3% currency conversion to INR
To get the money to India it may take as long as 60 days or more.
Is their more about payapl to be used for business in India with customers worldwide. If someone is using it please share your experience. People here said that their are mixed reviews about paypal, it will help in knowing these reviews.
I am fine with accepting payments in USD as long as customers in India can also make such payments using their credit cards and online payments from Indian banks.
Can someone share their experience about real time taken to get your money from paypal to your bank account in India. What all is required to get paypal account for business in India, also any issue we can have using paypal gateway…
Hi pradeep,
I found whiz Pay as a great gateway. its a indian company but was doing business in US. recently they started providing services in India. i was really confused in selecting a gate way and was not interested in entertaining new companies. Just to do research I gave a try by calling up this company (Talent beat). and i found that they support 36 country currencies . And various other features that they provide are unique in India.I am very happy by looking at the results.
Thanks to startup duniya for providing me their contact number they are quick in responding and very professional.
Thanks Talent Beat!
It should have SSL encryption, and PSS-DI certification
What are the various payment options you want to use?
It should be user friendly
Should have good customer support
Few things should be kept in mind before choosing A gate way:
It should be quick in importing and exporting data for accounting
There should be no need for you to be present at every transaction that occurs
Should know Shopping Carts are compatible with your intended payment gateway
currency conversion
100% Server up time
IP Address mapping
Always think of long term cost

Hi! praveen
Can you provide your business details so that we can advice you on the similar lines
Hi,
We are going to develop one Application which is based on Cellphone SMS. In our application End user will buy/pay some government stuff(like Electricity bill, Wealth Tax etc.) by a single sms. We are facing a problem of payment. We thought following options.
Money will deduct direct from Prepaid Connection Balance and Mobility Service Provider (Like BSNL, Reliance etc.) will handle remain transaction with government.
So we need to know that, is this a possible way of payment or not?
If not than please guide me some possible way for payment.

Hey guys,
Do anyone know whether there is any recurrence option in CCAvenue API so that I can charge my customers on regular basis(monthly/yearly) automatically?
Thanks
Hi Dave,
I am not sure about CC Avenues regarding this solution but yes Talent Beat (whizpay) can definitely help you regarding this solution.
Hi Pranav,
I was really happy to see a detailed comparison and discussion here on payment gateways.
I am myself looking for a payment gateway and had contacted indiapay and ccavenue. But they are not willing to provide their services for ‘Social Networking Websites’ saying they fall under high-risk category.
Could you throw some light into what this could mean? Ofcourse, my website will be clean and niche.
Please comment.
Regards,
Ravi Mittal
which is better EBS Or CCAvenue ,
Hi Kasi
After all the discussions, I feel that CC-Avenue has some issues and EBS seems to be a better bet.
Hello All,

can any one sugesst me the best gateway available i am getting confused by reading the Comments.
I would like to clear a few doubts people are having with the experience I have had till now for getting a payment gateway.
1. CCAvenue sucks because they are too snobbish to take your request. They have about 4000 customers and unless you are very potential to them, they will discard you saying your services are illegal.
2. Times of Money and ABCpayments have the same issues.
3. EBS was quite responsive. They understood my requirement.
4. Talent Beat were the 1st one to contact me. I would have loved working with them but they do not have net banking options and a very few debit card linking.
All in all, there is a big time monopoly of CCAvenue, EBS and TimesofMoney. They will take your request at their own interest. They all are doing excellent business (one of the players in my city is adding 30-40 portals every month!).
Its high time anyone in this forum thought of starting a payment gateway service. It could be quite profitable!
Hi,
This page is very informative. I’ve a big problem. I provide online technical support services to USA/UK by the name of http://www.pccare247.com. I tried using paypal for taking payments, but they’ve blocked our account and cancelled it and held the payment for 180 days. I tried EBS, they accepted payments for some time and then freezed the account and help our amount for 180 days. What can be a reliable permanent solution for me? Someone suggested opening a US company and opening a bank account with a US bank and getting their gateway is the solution for everything. Can somebody explain what should I do?
Hi,
Thanks for the information. Our company is also looking for e-commerce solution. We had emailed all the players and now waiting for response!!
Having high regards to this Topic which is opening up knowledge sharing to avoid pitpalls of PG…
We are looking for adding a payment gateway system on our website, we are into Niche business similiar to 99acres.com in terms of revenue generation, we have user mostly from outside India in ratio of 60% foreigners and 40% Indians. Volumes are in start up range not big. Which payment gateway is most reliable, efficient, economical and easy to use.
My initial Plan is plan was with CCavenue primary becos of More bank tie-up ignoring the fact of high TDR but they have this limitation with their 2 gateway which willn’t overlap to ful fill my requirement…I wanted INR charged for indian users and for Dollar transcation for Outside India User though I have designed website to show product values in their local currency , but transcation in PG for all Non-Indian users will be dollars irrespective of their local currency….which means INR & DOLLARS are only two currency used….They suggested me to have 2 a/c from each gateway
In the same thread , I see someone using 2 gateway…I’m not sure wheather this is opt solution…Provide me your suggestion.
We shall be happy to install a payment gateway system on out site, if the pricing offered is competative and right immediately within a couple of days time.
Thanks and please reply at 121praveen@gmail.com

Hi All,
I am planning to start a website and have read all the posts above. Now I am utterly confused on what to do. I will tell you my requirements.
1. I will have Indian as well as International customers. To make things clear; anyone logins from india, will be directed to the INR Page and any from the rest of the world to Dollar page.
(CC Avenue has different login for INR and Dollar transaction; So I am confused whether I should setup different accounts I don’t know!!!).
2. I need a gateway which will charge me less, because large amount transaction is going to happen.
3. Easy processing (Should not take much time)
4. Transparent..(No hidden things)
Any one of you can contact me with all the details including setup, amc, charges for transaction etc. Contact me personally if you can..
email:anusurendran@gmail.com
