VoiceTap is a Noida based startup that hopes to connect knowledge seekers with knowledge experts. As the fast-food content on the Internet grows, its becoming more and more difficult to search for relevant, precise, authoritative answers to your questions on Google. VoiceTap hopes to make it easier for those seeking answers to questions to connect with domain experts. They have two main channels for connecting users and experts – via mobile phone (dial a short code) and via Internet (google talk or using VOIP software).

Consider the following scenario which illustrates a use case for VoiceTap:

Let’s consider the situation of a student wants to give his GMAT and go for higher studies to an ivy league B-School in the US. His typical decision making process would be: Family, friends, extended friends of family, the internet and experts (who know all about what has to be done). While the first four are relatively easy to access – it’s usually very hard to get the final and probably the most crucial of the decision making blocks. That’s where we step in. The knowledge seeker uses Getafixx to reach out to authoritative experts related to his area of interest. Getafixx evaluates his requirements – and connects him to firstly to an expert who can help with the GMAT preparations (or guide him related to that). While preparing – he faces problems related to Maths. Again, Getafixx steps in – and allows him to interact with an expert who can solve that query.

Currently, they focus on five domains that they think are most important in the Indian context – education, career, money and health. Anyone can ask a question and anyone can become an expert. They have a rating system in place to rate the experts, which will help surface the top experts on a given subject.

They were shortlisted in the top 100 Asia startups by Red Herring.

I think their idea has definite potential and on quite a few levels coincides with the concept behind Aardvark – although of course, Aardvark focuses only on your extended social graph.

I would suggest them to focus on a single niche as of now – education & career. Considering that they have several IIT graduates on the team, they can really carve out a loyal user base in this area. And the demand for education / career related counseling in the Indian market is always high. Once they evangelize this sector, they can start opening up other domains as well.

Or do they have one? How much one has to pay to get expert guidance? If its free, experts will be of much lower quality, because a expert who doesnt understand cost of his own expertise is going to be a no expert at all!

December 17, 2009, VLSI Training Institute commented: I fully agree with Ajit's comments if it is free advice then its available all over the internet and that also for FREE !! But if one gets experts to give advice then it cannot be free or they could have a model to generate revenue through adverts for expert compensations.

Remember experts are not available for free!! May be retired experts or professors who just want to be in touch of society can be available but how much they are current with their knowledge can be different question.

December 17, 2009, Rohan commented: There is some another startup that had the same or similar business model. Actually just one of the founders is from IIT-Bombay. The rest of us are the normal kind. :)

Ajit, in addition to individual experts, there are a number experts from different corporates registered on the platform. Both the categories of experts provide the knowledge seekers with unbiased advice. Consumers don't have to pay anything to use this system. Our business model is centred around corporates. As far as the quality is concerned, I can just say this: add getafixx@voicetap.in to your Gtalk buddy list, say 'Hi', search for a particular topic and connect with an expert. Let us know how your experience was. We're always on the lookout for feedback that can help us improve. :)

VLSI Training Institute, fair point. And that is precisely the issue we're trying to address. Search on the internet leads to a plethora of information - for one specific question, there's hardly ever one link that will answer the question. You have to sift through tens of hundreds of links to find an answer to your question. What if you could just connect with an expert in real-time through voice or online chat who can give you a precise answer to a particular question? That's the problem we're trying to address.

December 17, 2009, Rajat commented: Hi Arpit,

If it is a very general one, I'll probably prefer the internet.

However, for every question that demands in-depth knowledge of a special topic (legal advices and so on..) I would use a premium service and pay for it.

@ Arpit, maybe a "how it works" button would add a certain value for new visitors.

One more question: whats your pricing strategy? What do you offer experts for their service?

MumbaiTrader is a new startup, offering social investing tips to Indians. The site brings together a network of pre-screened and verified advisors, who will offer their services to investors. Each advisor is ranked and investors can opt to follow an adivsor based on their rating and track record. This Covestor like model has been implemented by other Indian startups like MoneyVidya and MarketHero (which seems to have deadpooled now).

There are some aspects of the site that arent quite clear to me. Can any user join as an advisor ? What screening, if any, is done to join as advisor ? If any user can join as an advisor, then I suggest they change their marketing message – since it seems to give the wrong idea that advisors are pre-screened select set of users.

Additionally, access to every feature on the site requires you to login. Which is a huge limitation. You want the users to be able to access as much of your site as possible to get a feel of the site and its features. By forcing to login / signup before exploring the site features will severely limit the number of users signing up the service.

I recently uncovered an incident where Burrp seems to have deleted a user review. Nishith, founder of Pune based True Sparrow Systems (team behind SocialMedian – acquired by Xing), wrote a review for a Pune based burger joint, which he tweets was deleted by Burrp.

While I havent seen this as frequently occurring scenario, I am wondering if there are other similar instances that simply go unreported.

Burrp’s Terms of Service do state that they have the right to delete any content, including user posted reviews:

You understand and agree that Burrp may review and delete any Content, entertainment listings, business listings (including business name, address, phone, fax, distance, reviews, rating, reviews) that in the sole judgment of Burrp violates these Terms of Service or which might be offensive, illegal, or that might violate the rights of, harm, or threaten the safety of other users or members of the Burrp Site and/or other website users.

Its unclear why Burrp deleted Nishith’s comment and whether it violated Burrp’s ToS or it was deleted simply for building relationships with the biz – aka, financial gain.

If you have encountered a similar experience, do leave a comment and let me know.

The review in question was deleted because it was not a review about a personal experience at the cafe but instead a comment on the arrogant response from the business owner to another user. Keeping the review would have in fact favorably affected the overall review count of the business and pushed them up on the search results page. An explanation to this effect was sent to Nishith as well.

burrp! would never delete a user review for financial gain or relationships with business owners. The restaurant in question is not a client; even if it was it would not give them access to deleting user reviews. In fact, we are extremely particular about comments from users and take strict action against business owners who are putting up fake reviews for personal gain.

We will continue to do whatever it takes to maintain clean content on the site. God knows what rule I broke because they did not explicitly mention that. Apparently every body writes goody goody things about Egg Factory but my review would have spoilt their image. Hence Egg Factory must be paying some tip to Burrp ( their monetization mechanism is weak ) to rip off any bad review. I guess as long as you dont use swear words or write unrelated reviews, every review should be allowed. Its simple! allow restaurants to post fake reviews in exchange of an 'advertising fee'. and if somebody brings this to their notice, they simply delete their posts. i have witnessed this. i posted a write up on how the owner of Lemongrass, Malad is creating fake accounts and posting 5/4 star reviews on his page. the following review written by me was deleted:
Burpers, Isn't it way too obvious that most of the reviews below are FAKE and written by the owners? If its' obvious to a user like me, its definitely known to burrp as well.. unfortunately they are doing NOTHING about these fake reviews. I have been following the sudden rise in 5 / 4 star reviews and the praises used for this place.. and the profiles of the reviewers is NEW and lemon grass being the first review.
My Message to the owner : I know you want to promote your place, but please DO NOT USE this platform as this is ONLY for genuine feedback and thus is beneficial to aam janta. Btw, i have been to your restaurant MANY times.. infact i am quite a regular and have had the 'Live' stir fry many times.. many users have mentioned 'watch your food being cooked in front of you'- now thats a lie. my stir fry's have never been cooked live in front of me (out of the 5 times i've had it). No doubt, the food tastes good but you i don't accept posting of fake reviews.
I' m beginning to lose faith in the authenticity of reviews on this website. i have also seen Lemon Grass' ad on burrp's homepage which is a paid ad. Just putting 2 and 2 together, something looks fishy. If burrp doesn't take action against this, i"ll delete my profile (and i am a regular burrper) and make this fraud public. And i mean it.

July 9, 2011, Indian Entrepreneur commented: Every website has to comply with IT Act 2000. Their own income is normally spent on real estate, food, plus entertainment. Aarti & Anand, I wish there was a way to tackle slander online- But looks like there isn't.A lot of smoke ..cant find the real fire.

No - I dont work for Burrp or infomedia18 or Network18 group and I am NOT an Investment Banker who has put his client's money into Burrp, just a regular Joe user of Burrp from Mumbai.I and my family use Burrp all the time - and I glad that they(Burrp) are around. They made my life easier.Keep up the good work.

All VC's are alike .They will come when profits are around.
An eg. NR Narayan Murthy was on front page of ET for showing interest in startups in India.
There is a company providing "internet security solutions" to Banks in India .But this company is not able to break in its clients ,even though it has better product on anti-phising and anti-spamming.It is on multi-factor tool authentication.
Only reason is that the biggies like Infoys and Wipro are deeper clutches and dont allow innovation.
Allowing external innovation ,for them , means loosing a client.

Future address: Unknown

August 20, 2010, NVSN Murthy, Scientist and a temporary visitor on earth currently passing through Asian soil commented: Uncertainty is more certain and more inevitable than the most inevitable change.

Thus, Indian entrepreneurs in general and corporate sector in particular, must be more watchful than never before since emerging technologies demanding abrupt changes needs abnormal potential to absorb changes associated.

August 22, 2010, NVSN Murthy, Scientist and a temporary visitor on earth currently passing through Asian soil commented: Reduce IT assesses

The number of Income Tax (IT) assesses can be reduced drastically from several crores to few thousands by making the employer responsible for collection of income tax at the source.

Thus, IT assessment for individuals can be eliminated. The same practice can also be extended to consultants, retainers and other professionals being hired by organizations.

Thus paperwork, paper consumption and forests can be saved.

Similarly, buyer must deduct Sales Tax at source for the goods bought by him. This system has numerous benefits and money flows directly from the source to the government without delay and loss.

Moreover, we do not need several names, departments and ACTs like: income tax, sales tax, service tax, excise, gift tax, wealth tax, luxury tax, entertainment tax, entry tax, exit tax, turnover tax, corporate tax, property tax, pollution tax, road tax, building tax, toll tax, development tax, land tax, education tax, cess etc. since everything is a tax and everything is going to the government.

Rename all these taxes as NATION BUILDING FUND (NBF) since it imparts patriotism in taxpayer and everyone feels proud in giving fund to the nation. This concept promotes national integration too. Since GDP is not available to the nation, let us concentrate on GNR (gross national revenue).

Let us appreciate the fact that simple rules are easy to follow, easy to implement, easy to monitor and easy to amend. If rules are simple and easy, the commercial activity increases and revenue collection increases.

Let us not discourage the commercial activity since it is the lifeline of the nation.

A sale is a sale whether within the state or outside the state since it is a sale within India. A sale is a sale whether goods or services. A sale is a sale whether first sale or second sale or tenth sale.

Services as an employee and services as a consultant / retainer cannot be two different things, hence put them on the same platform since employees and consultants are involved in selling their services.

Hence sales tax, service tax and income tax can be merged into one and it can be called as Nation Building Fund (NBF). This NBF need not exceed 2% of the gross sale value of goods or services if all exemptions, concessions and computations are eliminated for which, exempt none from income tax, sales tax, service tax, excise duty etc.

Most importantly, abolish all exemptions and concessions to EOUs, IT, BPO and Software units since all these units are making profits and utilizing infrastructure being provided by the nation.

Deduct all taxes at source. Abolish tax returns and tax refunds. Abolish all computations and calculations associated with all taxes since these computations and calculations are not helping the nation in any manner, on the other hand, these computations are helping the tax evader. Let us introduce computationless taxing structure. Thus, collect only 2% tax on the gross sale value of goods or services.

This concept increases national revenue by at least 400 per cent while drastically reducing paperwork, delays, corruption and tax evasion. It brings cheers to millions of employees, consultants, contractors, retailers, traders, merchants, entrepreneurs, industrialists, investors and businessmen. Thus there will be overall progress.

Commonsense is the essence of kinks of knowledge available to human beings on earth. Therefore, commonsense has become the most uncommon commodity of our world ever since the birth of earth. Unfortunately this priceless commodity is becoming more and more uncommon day-by-day, therefore due to its unavailability, we seldom apply this priceless commodity to solve problems.

Moreover, we prefer to design solutions that are more complex than the actual problem since it is profitable to us, finally, with vested interests we post a feeling that living with the problem is better than solving the problem.

Lastly - for reasons best known to all, we cleverly hide a fact that the best solution will be the simplest even for the most complicated problem of our world, since we are living in a politically polluted world, we need to understand and digest these naked facts since these facts are nothing but absolute truths.

This is the only secret of his success.

Therefore, let us make our laws / rules / regulations / procedures relevant to our nation since the needs, problems, priorities and culture of different nations are different.

At least, let us be selfishness enough to adopt the priceless recommendations of our candle-like scientist NVSN Murthy for providing peace, progress and prosperity to individuals, institutions and nation.

Annadhatha MK Rao, Economist, Age: 65

September 25, 2010, annadhatha MK Rao, Economist commented: Being a mathematician, John Nash took Nobel Laureate for his economic theory (Nash Equilibrium), whereas, Scientist NVSN Murthy has single-handedly propounded two theories (one in metallurgy i.e. Nori Hardenability Theory and one in economics i.e. Nori Economic Theory – Norinomics).

Interestingly, there is no evidence that John Nash had propounded a theory in his mother field (mathematics) like Scientist NVSN Murthy who propounded a theory in his mother field (metallurgy) as well as in economics.
Therefore, Scientist NVSN Murthy deserves two Nobel Laureates.

The concerned authorities must look into the matter and do justice to this double-theory scientist of Indian origin. Neglecting Indians is improper.

Unfortunately, professional jealousy and politics are debarring scientist NVSN Murthy from awards and rewards even though Norinomics by scientist Nori Murthy is the greatest gift to the people and nations of our world.

Nori Murthy had stuffed priceless and timeless philosophy in simple words and meticulously made it applicable to individuals, institutions and nations.

Further, he made his universal philosophy (Norinomics) profitable, peace-ensuring, progress-causing, readily adoptable, praiseworthy, award-worthy and worship-worthy too.

Thus, Nori Murthy certainly deserves institutional, national and international awards and rewards along with Nobel Laureate.

Unlike mathematics, physics and chemistry - economy and economics are not universal subjects due to the fact that economy is a complex product of different elements which are significantly different for different regions of earth. Promoting a common platform for ensuring uniformity in understanding of this region-sensitive/nation-sensitive subject is a fundamental mistake. Also, its measurement or assessment for projections or comparisons is a bigger mistake. Thus, misunderstanding and misapprehensions are mounting day-by-day throughout the globe. Therefore, the international community must put-off this fire to control further damage. Until we sort-out this issue, we cannot bring economics into discussion.

Copyright © Pranav Dharma -StartupDunia, 2006-2008

Introduction

Question: Where are the successful product startups from India? How to become one? And how long will we be taking example of only one company (Zoho)?

To answer this question, we’ll be attending NASSCOM Product Conclave 2009 on Oct 27-28 at the Lalit Ashok hotel, Bangalore.
It’s a traditional conference organized by NASSCOM (short for “National Association of Software and Services Companies”), the consortium that represents software companies in India.
The agenda this year is “Positioning to Win.”

Why is it interesting?

As the official website says:

Come, demonstrate your product, network, share with peers, and learn how to identify market opportunities, build a product organization with domain expertise, roll out a product, build brands, reach out to prospects and customers, create a network effect of channels, user and development communities – in short how to build a viable and scalable business model.

Of course, the caveat is always that no amount of teaching or sessions will help anyone until, you, the audience takes it seriously, imagine putting it into action immediately and ask questions on what will come up in your course of action. In short, look for the advice that you need.

Now that we have that diatribe out of the way, let us focus on the conference. There will be 4 keynotes, 11 panel sessions, 4 workshops, networking sessions and unconference sessions. The full program agenda is available as a PDF. The truly interesting part of this event is the quality of people expected to be on stage.

Here are the parts of the agenda that we found interesting:

1. Key Sessions and Panel discussions:

The downside is that because there are three separate parallel tracks, we won’t be able to cover all of them. We hope that we can cover the whole spectrum along with other indian startup blogs.

We wonder if we can hope for talks such as the one by Prof. Deepak Malhotra (Harvard Business School) about how to negotiate at NASSCOM Leadersip Forum 2007.

Right from initial idea to leveraging developers, it highlights how TweetPhoto stumbled along the way and then went on to have Britney Spears as a user.

Iglooo, a Pune based startup, has launched a price comparison website for books. You can search for a book based on title / author and they provide price comparison results from vendors like A1 books, First & Second, Landmark and Crossword. To purchase, you are redirected to the vendors website. Currently, they claim not to be making any money from referrals but that should change down the line.

In their pitch, they seemed to stress on their ‘clutter free design’. However, there’s a difference between no design and clutter free design and the latter doesnt necessarily mean the former. The design definitely needs some work from a usability perspective. For instance, if a book has no photo associated, display a default ‘no image’ thumbnail. Allow to sort results by title as well. If possible and available, include a brief summary of the book in the site results — you could use Amazon API or any knowledge available from public sources like Wikipedia for this. Use a horizontal line or border to easily demarcate the various listings in the results page.

In its current form, the site provides little value to an end user. Let me elaborate why:

For starters, you cant discover new books using the site. Just like music and movies, you dont necessarily know the title of every book you will like and want to read. Book discovery is an equally important aspect of such sites. Secondly, without the book summaries, I have to visit the vendors website, get an overview of what the book is about — if it doesnt interest me, come back to Iglooo’s result set and then rinse and repeat. As an example, say I’m searching for books related to startups. If I search for startup in the title field, the back & forth process on the results set just becomes too painful.

Few additional suggestions to the founders – get a logo developed ASAP if you are serious about building a brand (learnt it the hard way on StartupDunia). You also might want to consider an alternate name for the site — its too easy to spell it wrong in the url (there are 3 ‘o’s).

Although it needs a few tweaks, the service does have some potential.

Coming to discovering books, I do not understand what made you think this is a book recommendation engine. It clearly states, find books by author or title. And I think it does the job quite well on that. Discovering books based on tags would be a neat idea nonetheless and I hope they start this too. I am looking for a book's cheapest price and I think this does it rather well. If I need to discover books or read summaries, I have amazon and a zillion other such sites.

It is an undeniable fact that mobile is *the* platform in India. SMS usage aka texting is probably one of the most pervasive mobile applications prevalent in India. However, if you want to provide an SMS interface to your web-app, there is no easy solution out there. You need to either buy a SMS short code for yourself (which is pretty darn expensive) or you can take a do it yourself (DIY) approach by connecting a GSM modem to your server and use software like Kannel to access incoming SMS messages.

So, here’s an idea.

Instead, why not buy a short code and then have multiple customers ‘rent’ the short code ? The way it works is – say you get a shortcode ’12345′. You then let each customer reserve a keyword that they can use with this shortcode. So, for instance, if I need to leverage SMS in my app, I reserve the shortcode SDUNIA. Say some one else takes up the keyword FBOOK. Users of my web-app can send an SMS to my app by sending a text to 12345 SDUNIA <msg>. The backend service parses this keyword and decides which customer the SMS belongs to. So, you need to provide an API as well so that your customers can retrieve their SMS messages and use it in their web-app. You charge the customers a fee as long as they use the service.

This approach has a lot of potential since it saves other startups and other businesses looking for an SMS interface the cost and effort involved in getting their own, exclusive SMS shortcode. They can literally hit the ground running in terms of providing a mobile interface to their app /service.

TextMarks is one such US based startup that does this same thing pretty successfully.

I’m not sure if such a service already exists in the Indian market. Also, one would need to check for any legal issues involved specific to the Indian market.

let me know what you think.

what no one has done yet, apart from ValueFirst with Alertrix I think, is make it easy to use - where you can log in online and buy a keyword at a price.

one problem with these short codes now is a TRAI notification, according to which short codes need to have an alphanumeric prefix for identification of their originating operator. This makes it difficult for users to reply to messages. For example, if I query 556655 for Help, I'll get a response from, say, TM-556655 . I can't click reply and respond to it because it's alphanumeric.

September 22, 2009, pranav commented: thanks all for the input and correcting me - i list such ideas as and when they occur leaving the onus of doing the research on those who find it interesting.

Enterprise SMS GupShup allows you to set up keywords and masks from the online interface. (a Keyword is for directing incoming messages to your webapp whereas a Mask is what shows up as sender Id in the messages that YOU send).

Just google for "bulk SMS software". Actually, their primary service is bulk SMS from PC, but most of them offer short code renting @ about 4.5 INR p/m

I think that just getting a sim card and putting it "up" with kannel for inbound routing, isn't the key. The legality involved here is that almost all telcos TOS mentions in the application form, something on the following lines:
"That, the customer shall use the sim and associated services for the purpose of making and receiving calls, messages, and other services available in the SIM for his *personal use*, not any commercial use."
Even if you "bypass" the above, the telcos shall disconnect you and it gets messy, as happened with NetCore of Rajesh Jain ( http://emergic.org/2009/02/17/we-versus-vodafone/ ) . The plea given by VodaFone and Bharti was that NetCore was flouting NDNC norms for alert services, while the truth was that they just could not see someone bypassing the VAS ecosystem, thus denying them their "lion's share".

Scopial (MVP backed startup) and SheepStop are two startups that launched their community sourced T shirt design contests. The concept is simple – new design contests are regularly announced on the sites. Designers can participate and submit their designs – the community votes and the winning design gets prominent focus and the winning designer gets cash rewards. This model has been successfully executed by Threadless in the US.

They enter a somewhat crowded marketplace – other players like Myntra, Pringoo and InkFruit offer some of the same services (although one could argue that myntra and pringoo are much more generic).

So, unless Scopial and SheepStop have some major marketing / viral idea under their sleeve, its gonna be a challenge competing against some of these established (& well funded) players.

To build their brand and market their app, I would say the best place to start would be college campuses. Provide some free branded T shirts to college kids with some eye catching designs and use them as your college ambassadors. College Fests offer tremendous potential to market such apparel – provide some free t-shirts for a handful of kids to wear during the college fests. Additionally, they could also work with the college fest organizing committees to see if the design aspect of the college fest tee’s could be staged on their site. Leverage Orkut and Facebook effectively since those are some of the sites where majority of the urban youth spends their online time.

At the same time, approach design schools and students of NIFT etc. to sign up and submit and compete for their designs – great way to get new, fresh content with low overhead.

So to reiterate, unless they can nail this marketing aspect and or introduce some great virality, its gonna be an uphill battle for them. Success lies not only in cool designs but ‘being noticed’ in those cool desgins as well – and for that they need to tap into the youth demographic.

Santosh and Anjali, the team behind Bookeazy and Lipikaar, will be launching their latest startup Dubzer at the DEMO event in San Diego. In fact, the BookEazy url now redirects to the Dubzer website.

Not much is known about what exactly Dubzer is about, but based on their Twitter updates as well as some of the job description, it seems that they might be doing something related to language translation.

The company is incubated by Pune based Persistent systems. What ever it is, good luck to Santosh and Anjali with their launch.

One of the best things was their presentation. If you havent gotten a chance to view it, I’ve embedded it below – Himanshu, one of the founders changed outfits from F1 racer to a pilot and finally coming close to whacking a judge with a baseball bat. Absolute must watch.

On the heels of the Mint acquisition, a Bangalore based startup – Perfios – is hoping to replicate some of that success in the Indian market. Perfios is a web based app that helps you consolidate your financial information and provide a single point of view and insight into your finances. You can import data from different sources – for example, import info from your bank accounts, credit cards, mutual funds, equity etc. into Perfios and it helps you monitor and analyse your finances from a single dashboard.

Needless to say, the service has great value (as validated by the Mint acquisition). There might be an initial hurdle of getting users (mainly due to apprehension on part of the users to trust the service), but as users get more comfortable, I do think that Perfios has some solid potential.

The one horribly icky thing about their current site is the ‘Tour’ section, which is an animated powerpoint slideshow and takes foreover to convey its message. They should make this more simpler and get the message across to the users and provide some detailed screenshots of the dashboard as well. If I were a potential customer, I know I’d want to take a peek at that before signing up.

The service is currently invite only, but they should be launching publich pretty soon.

I was under the impression that Indian banks don't support (at least as of quite recently) some set of standards (dont recall the name) that are mandatory for US banks that mint.com used to basically pull all the info for a single user across multiple accounts in one place; to provide analytics etc...These standards are read-only so thats somewhat reassuring for finicky folks... How does that work in the perfios case? Do they scrape info by having crawlers/scrapers log in? I wonder how comfortable people are with that..

About the need/convenience for such a service, there is no question! Just simple first order analytics eg how do I spend now compared to say a year ago -- is something that my bank doesnt provide me...!

September 15, 2009, Rajat commented: Does it store the password of the user in their database (like mint.com did).
If it stores the password on the servers, i will think twice before putting the details of my bank account with a startup that might or might not exist tomorrow.Mint.com clearly told this thing on their site. Not sure whether perfious mentions it clearly or not.
But i am sure people who donot know of that or are unware of that will start using the service and might get used to it also.Mostly young people would use it that what i think.

September 15, 2009, pranav commented: i think it does -- or rather, it needs to. I have been using Perfios for quite some time now and as expected it took time for me to get convinced on the security and privacy issues. Let me tell you what I have learned from many interaction with them .
They do not store the password on their servers, they have a patent pending technology which actually allows them to encrypt the password on the user's PC.
I even gave it a try by using another computer for my account, after entering the credentials on my laptop. it did NOT autoupdate, and also a pop told me that I am not using my system!!
You can interact with Aditya (adi@perfios.com), who is the sales/marketing fellow there.

Good to see that people are really talking about Perfios. Let me tell u guys, its an amazing website. It has completely automated my accounts, I can forward Mutual Fund and credit card statements, categorize transactions and generate reports like how much did I spend on grocery - compare with last year and many other things!! I have loved it coz its new to me!
I guess, its an invite only service as of now. website has all the details.

Sorry, we did not see your mail. Must have missed it somehow. There is no doubt that one has to be extremely careful about what one discloses on the web and more so if one has to use one's financial institution's credentials. Perfios has highlighted its security model in its site as well as its application (surely, we need to talk a lot more). To reiterate...unlike many online sites, we DO NOT store any financial institution credentials on our server. All userids and password are encrypted and stored locally on the user's machine. To protect your privacy, we do not ask anything more than an email id and the same is not shared with anyone. The data stored in your account is protected and accessed (not viewed) only for the perpose of taking backups. A user is free to take out all the data he has, in an excel format, delete his accounts and walk out any time she wants. That is the level of transparency and flexibility we would like to provide for our users.

Disclosure: I am the co-founder of Perfios.

Regards

Vericar is a nice concept too but their website looks horrible, infact pathetic.
This idea has great potential if they use it well and build credibility like CARFAX in US.

I liked Adscoot as a unique idea. Are they going to use the fund money to buy scooters remodel and print Ads.How are they going to charge each client, who will drive those scooters, they will use the fund money to pay those guys monthly salary. The idea has potential and i think this kind of idea does require funding, its a costly proposition.

August 17, 2009, Rajat commented: Nabbo is good too.

iJiny is a new, bootstrapped service that attempts to replicate Twitter’s concise format success to the classifieds market. Its a ‘micro classifieds’ service, where users post and discover classified ads that are only 160 characters in length. Their goal is to extend the service ultimately to the mobile phone and leverage the high SMS usage in the Indian market and provide an easy access for users to post and search through classifieds.

The UI aside, I think the biggest hurdle for them will be to evangelize the service. The target market size maybe large – but without sufficient / appropriate marketing, it’ll be difficult to get traction. Besides, as in Vakow’s case, leveraging SMS could turn out to be a costly proposition without a concrete revenue model.

I always wondered the REAL use of Twitter like concepts. I love the fact we can know what others are doing real time but frankly twitter is mostly made up of businesses and marketing people. Who wants to keep track of what strangers are doing every minute anyways :)

I hope this catches on and the site becomes popular, would be nice to see similar ones here in US

BeeVolve, an iAccelerator incubated startup, has launched its social media analytics product into pre-alpha. The platform ‘mines’ user sentiment from consumer shopping and review sites, twitter, blogs and mainstream media to provide insights into products and brands. Unlike services provided by other competitors, Beevolve provides a ‘feature level’ analysis of products / services, thereby providing a ‘sentiment analysis’ of the product.

For example, consider their sample case study of Times of India’s recent redesign. After mining content from twitter and forums, they provided the following analysis:

Tag cloud for the old Times of India design:

Tag Cloud for the new TOI Design:

Sentiment Ratings for the old and new design:

I think Beevolve has some great potential for success if it can get an initial roster of clients. As recent surveys have shown, social media usage for the younger generation is exploding – and Indian brands will sooner or later need to wake up and need some means to tap into that chatter.

While launching a classifieds site isnt too difficult, the main challenge they will have in execution – how to attract users to post classifieds. Currently, they have very few listings on the site and till they solve the classic ‘chicken and egg’ problem, they’d fast fade into oblivion (as is the case with any classifieds site).

In India News Papers/ TV/Local Cable channels are still a much stronger medium then just putting Ads Online.

July 19, 2009, Sachin commented: Hey........ u say they dont have any ranking in alexa, i just checked and they are ranked 96406. And even if a website is not having a good alexa ranking but are earning good from sponsored ads is more then enough for a good startup........ don't judge any startup with rankings, its a startup it will definitely take time for them to get some ranking.

July 27, 2009, Kevalsing commented: I am also in a process of starting a new classifieds site. would like to invite suggestions for getting the traffic.

July 28, 2009, Buvanesh commented: This Classified site looks quite good............:)

August 23, 2010, 24needs commented: We just started a new classified website www.24needs.com

EduCell is a startup founded by IIT currently enrolled IIT students with the goal of mentoring students who hope to ‘crack the IIT- JEE’ exam. Around 200 IIT students provide mentoring sessions to IIT aspirants and guide them through their preparations. The USP being that having ‘been there, done that’ in the recent past, they’re in a much better position to guide and mentor other students. All registered students get personalized guidance from current IIT students and also are provided with sample tests, study material and motivational CD’s. You also get notes used by JEE toppers, with the hope that the notes help you to score well at the JEE.

Other features on the site include tips-tricks via mobile, video sessions by IITians, live chat with IIt students and discussion forums.

I think this is an amazing idea – with their unique USP, they definitely have the ability to stand out in a crowded market. The market size for IIT-JEE preps is huge – and even if they make a tiny dent in it, they stand to make some solid gains of it.

I guess some from the IIM’s needs to get inspired and needs to port over this brilliant idea to the CAT exams as well — I’d say that’d be an even bigger success story (I believe CAT exam market / test preps is more larger and lucrative – but dont quote me on it).

You can know more about Educell, and regarding applying, at the following website : www.educell.info. Alternatively, drop off a mail to contact@educell.info, or call +91 0771 4033954.

We do not have any "centres" so as to say. Our main office is located in Raipur, Chattisgarh. Since we help students on phone/send material by post, we do not have local centres.

Once you sign up, you can create your contest, the questions and decide the prizes. You get a url to the contest on the iTweet2Win site and you tweet that url to your followers. Contest participants can indicate their participation by tweeting your custom message in their twitter stream.

They offer a free basic version as well as a premium version for $9.99. For the paid version, you can customize your content look / theme and brand it as per your requirements. You also get advanced analytics about how your contest is being received by other Twitter users.

Once the contest end date is reached, you can select the winner by going to the contest page on their site.

You can take a look at a sample contest here.

I think if they can get the word out there, they’re onto something here. Leveraging Twitter’s massive user base and its inbuilt virality might just work great for iTweet2win.
