CrikeM announces deal with Reliance
This just in from Business Standard - CrikeM, which I wrote about here, just announced a deal with Reliance World to enable its users to upload, view and share cricket videos with the rest of the world through CrikeM. Thats 240 outlets in 104 cities across the country. With the impending World Cup, this can be a huge boost for CrikeM.
BBC show on India Rising
BBC just started a very interesting show on India - India Rising. BBC still remains, hands down, my favorite news site.
Herd mentality and Indian startups
I’ve noticed the herd mentality is becoming popular when it comes to Indian startups. Let me explain what I mean.
One startup enters a particular domain with all fan fare and great buzz. Within no time you’ll come across news about 2-3 more startups launching in the same domain. Plenty of examples to illustrate my point:
1) Seventymm was the first entrant into the online DVD rental market. Suddenly you have Madhouse, CatchFlix, ClixFlix and several others who follow suit (For crying out loud, you dont have these many players in the US too)
2) Video Sharing for India - I dont know which one launched first. But within no time, you have AapKaVideo, MeraVideo, ApnaTube, VideoDubba
Toufee 2.0 pre launching 7th feb @ 10am
Toufee, the site that enables you to make Flash based movies, which I wrote about here is ready to do a pre-launch of their v 2.0 tomorrow.
Seems that they have lots of new features that are included as part of this v2.0. Here’s a list of all the features that can be expected. I am pretty sure Sanchit and Navneet must have done a great job - I feel they are very passionate and sincere about Toufee.
Bangalore burning ?
First it was the death of cine-star Rajkumar, then there were protests against the execution of Saddam and now Cauvery issue — Bangalore has become quite the hotspot for trouble these days. CNN-IBN had a great article about the sudden rise in tensions in Bangalore. I cant seem to locate that article any more - it made a very interesting read. If anyone can locate it, please email me the link.
Me, my laptop and my wife
My wife often complains that my laptop is my first wife. I dont blame her. Here’s why - My daily schedule goes something like this - wake up, power up the baby, read news - blogs - emails, get ready, go to work, get home & power up my laptop again. Of a typical 17 - 18 hour day, I end up spending almost 90% of it in front of the laptop. TV has now become my secondary source of entertainment and information. Keep me away from the laptop for a day or two and I start getting uncomfortable. Signs of laptop-internet addiction ?

Orkut woes continued..
First there was the case of an air-hostess and now this - Schoolgirl made sex worker on Orkut. There have been several issues related to sexual predation on MySpace in the US. All such incidents definitely call for a better way of policing the social networks - a dilemma for the social networks. After all, they walk a thin line between giving the user community the desired freedom and trying to avoid occurrences of such incidents.
Criki - Digg clone for Cricket fans
Criki - yes, you read it correctly (its Criki not Crikey - Steve Irwin’s pet phrase) is a Digg clone that allows users to submit stories and other forms of rich media (audio, video, pictures) related to cricket. The rest of the community then votes for the stories and decides which stories sift to the top. In return, each user earns karma for their votes, comments and submissions. Here’s how they describe themselves:
Criki will be a mashup of popular cricket content found on the web including Live Scores,News, pictures, video, audio etc. Criki’ s content will be driven by the users and will be drawn from the top cricketing sites in the world. Criki provides a snapshot of the content.
I would like to term them as a site that relies on user submitted content rather than user generated content (UGC). UGC, in my perspective, is original content that is generated by the user community.
Sunil Mittal and the missed calls phenomena
The ‘missed call’ phenomena is boon for customers and a curse for the mobile operators. Missed calls translate to choking of bandwidth and no real revenue for mobile operators. Sunil Mittal (Bharti CEO) also does it - albeit for different reasons. None the less, with SMS revenues continuing to diminish and people relying on ‘missed calls’, the mobile operators are definitely on the hunt for the next killer app / VAS to add to their revenue stream.
