VodaFone, Microsoft India to launch SMS search service
VodaFone and Microsoft India have jointly launched SMS search service to VodaFone users in India. The cost is 30 paisa per search query and the search technology is powered by Microsoft’s Live search. Currently, the search service will be launched in 8 Indian cities with others to follow later.
Late 2006, Bharti Airtel had announced a deal with Google, where Google search will power the mobile WAP portal for Airtel.
Yahoo has been equally aggressive in the Indian mobile market.
After all, a market size of 250 million users is too big an opportunity to miss.

SMS Search for local search is a good business and has been tried by Onyomo.com and Justdial in India but I doubt any other kind of search being successful over the SMS.We must look at the fact that of 250 million users there is a respectable percent of those who cant even type an SMS or are almost illiterate. They majority of the Indians know only how to use their mobile to make and receive calls.

Please excuse the typing error in the above comment. “They majority of..” should be read as “The majority of..”

naman,
its just a matter of time. if i’d told you 10 years back that your local panwala will carry a mobile, you’d have laughed at it. similarly, as content and UI goes Indic, the usage will increase.
