Exciting product startups just not happening in India
October 12, 2007 · Posted in Entrepreneurship, India Web 2.0
Ashish expresses his disappointment about the lack of exciting product startups emerging from India.
I’ve talked about this several times earlier: here, here, here and here. Some of the leading VCs - Avnish Bajaj, Ashish Gupta, Vani Kola seem to agree.
Ashish, you’re spot on — now on to the difficult part. Identifying and addressing what can be done to improve the dynamics.

hi :
i tend to agree. but i think when it comes to services then its a different story.
but we do have quite a few product companies, at least in my line of business (software products for banking & financial services). there are quite a few impressive products here and some have even managed to make a mark in the international markets. including iflex (flexcube), nucleus (finnone), cashtec, 3i infotech, ramco, subex, suntec, credence analytics (my company which makes treasury, risk and investment management solutions), etc.
but i would agree that it is only a company like iflex which has managed to scale up the product business to a global level.
and i think one of the biggest challenges faced by people like us is marketing and establishing credibility among clients in other markets.

p.s. i maintain 2 blogs. one a personal one (guruprasad.blogspot.com) on many things indian and my own perspective on things we see around us. the other one (kalina-rendezvous.blogspot.com) is all about spirituality, vedanta, chinmaya mission, etc. do check them out.
Pranav,
This is a more of a socio-economic problem of the country than a technology problem that India doesn’t have a successful global(local) product software. Let’s put the question in a different way. How many so called developed countries in the world have a successful product software company. Yes, there are SAP etc and very few others which can be counted on fingers where as US beats all others hands down. While its fair to hope for one, its totally unfair to compare with US and get disappointed for not having one.
It’s also to do with the Pysche of Indian consumers that anything imported(from US or elsewhere) should be great.
Venkat..I talk in reference of Internet startups. the term ‘product startups’ because I’d linked to ashish’s post.
so, to further clarify - innovative internet startups are just not happening in India.
