Microsoft Research’s Virtual India project

October 10, 2007 · Posted in India Web 2.0

I’d earlier written about SadakMap, a collaborative or community map, where the community users collaboratively edited the map and added places of interest.

I happened to come across a similar project, called Virtual India, from Microsoft Research done in collaboration with Dept. of Science and Technology. The project is still in pilot and the goal is enable users to add pushpins at places of interest. Support for regional languages like Hindi, Kannada and Tamil are also provided. While the service still doesnt look ready for prime-time, it does validate SadakMap founder Unmesh’s idea.
