Hotmail India offers personalized email ID’s via CoolHotmail.com
If MySpace profile pages are anything to go by, one thing is clear - personalization is a very popular feature with the younger generation. Younger folks are highly likely to do their own thing and make use of personalized bling to highlight their online personalities.
Building up on this personalization feature, Microsoft has announced the launch of CoolHotmail - a suite of personalized email id’s for Indians. So now, you can choose an email id based on where you live (id@mumbairocks.in,id@salaamdelhi.in), who you like (id@clubaamir.com, id@clubdhoni.in), what you like (id@vadapaavrocks.in, id@ilovebikes.in), your personality (id@F1freak.in, id@iamhot.in) or something that highlights your individuality (id@itsmychoice.in, id@shri420.in).
As per Samir Saraiya, product chief, Windows Live, “The vast young user population now wants personalized identity and wants to advertise their choices and these domains we are launching will cater to that”.
The million dollar question - Will this work ?
I can say with quite a bit of certainty that the geek and early adopter crowd arent going to be enthused by this announcement. So, no one from this section is likely to give up their existing email accounts and sign up for these personalized ids.
But then, this early adopter crowd is not the market that Microsoft is aiming to reach out to with this service. It is the young, celeb crazy, cricket crazy, Orkut denizens who keep sending ‘frenship’ requests are the ones being targeted. And my gut feeling says that it is very likely that this service will get very popular with this demographic. And this demographic forms a huge chunk of the online Indian population.
Lets give it a couple of months and see how this service pans out. None the less, give credit to Microsoft for trying.

On a side note, I cant stop laughing at some of the more absurd domains - iambald.in, indiankhiladi.co.in, samepinch.in, slipperysadhu.in. Some others, i just dont comprehend - wicom.co.in, clingonbling.co.in, flemgems.co.in ??
Which is the most absurd id you find ?
