Stealth startup 4 Interactive has launched their local search engine site called AskLaila. The site currently has listings only for the city of Bangalore, but has plans to expand to the metros and 22 other cities within the next year. The local search can be drilled down not only to the locality but down to the block level. Users can rate and review the local listings and can also have them SMS’d or emailed. The startup has 16 technical employees and a 100-member strong editorial team.
With the advent of AskLaila, and already existing players including Guruji, TolMolBol and Burrp, local search in India is definitely getting hot and crowded.
Matrix Partners invested (PDF) an undisclosed amount in 4 Interactive in December 2006.
100 member strong editorial team ??
That seems to be a very big team for a startup that’s touting their powerful search algorithm:
The technology involved in the search engine is an advanced algorithm that dissipates all available information and contextualizes each word or a set of words to search a desired information, to give accurate local information.
