Do you love what you are doing ?
Be it Guy Kawasaki or be it Paul Graham or be it Steve Jobs - every pundit swears by the mantra that you should do what you love. If you do not enjoy what you are doing, there are very few chances that you will be successful in it.
So, here’s a question for those of you reading this post -
How many of you actually love what you are doing ?
If not, are you doing anything to change that ?
Feel free to leave your responses via anonymous comments. It would be great to get a feel of how many of you are actually pursuing your passion, whatever that might be.

Well tough question to answer. What I feel is that its not not “doing what u love” but “loving what you do” is more inportant.Life is all about adaptatiion.
Secondly doing what we want to do somtimes required desperate measures and involve lot of risk which we may not like to take consideraing lots of reasons.
Thirdly all of us are differnt satge of socail, cultural, economical and personal evolution and doing what we want to depend on this evolution too.
Last but not least this whole question of doing what we want to is very vouge. To clearly understand what our strengths are and what exectly we want , we required very strong human being.Bill gates, Steve jobs and guy kawasaki tryed many things and in their succcess they discoverd the things they like.
satpal,
loving what you do may also include making a compromise with your existing job / work. You talk about adaption, but passion is the key here.
I agree with what you say - but if it were so easy - to do what you love - it wouldnt be a topic of discussion at all now..would it ?
every other person would be doing what they love..And of course, the journey begins with identifying what you love to do in the first place…if it were so easy, there wouldnt be a need for all the motivational speakers and career coaches
Pranav,
Most of us are indeed trying to do what we are passionate about. It does involve a lot of risk and hard work, but the pleasure of doing what you love is worth it. I truly believe one cannot be successful till one is doing something one enjoys. “Take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get†(George Bernard Shaw)
I agree with Satpal that everyone has a different situation and might be “loving” what they are doing, but it depends how you overcome those situations and end up doing what you love to.
I find it very hard to try-to-love something that I don’t really like. I might live with it for some time due to situation and what not, but will make an effort to get out of it.
Thr truth is, you have to dabble in many colors before finding your own color. Similarly, while I may not always be satisfied and happy with what I am doing, it is enabling me to reach closer to what I want to do. And with that consciously in my head, I enjoy the joruney as mush as the destination..
When I cannot change certain situations professionally, I seek and adopt activities outside of work that would give me the right balance. And have found it always works for me.

well said…for me personally, its very difficult to enjoy the journey if I do not like what I do. It ends up showing in my work,my productivity, my zeal.
But as you said, I try and pursue activities outside of work that would balance it out..Blogging, being one of them
I am sure we need to compromise with few things in life when we try out our passions.
@satpal
Risk is everywhere, its there from the first breath we take on the earth and will be there till the last. So, doing what we love is not a big risk. At the end of the day we should feel satisfied for the work we are doing. That said, I accept with your last point. We should know what exactly we want. I just wanted to say, we should not be afraid of risk to try out our passions.
The question is whether we should love what we are doing or WE SHOULD GO AND DO WHAT WE ACTUALLY LOVE TO DO? There is big difference between the two. One may love the job they are doing but it may not be their passion.
This debate reminds me one of the best works “The Zahir” by Paulo Cohelo. Its an interesting novel about extreme obsession and ultimately doing what we love or we are passionate about.
I have quit my well paying day job at an Indian IT giant to try out my passions. I know it involves a lot of risk. I am compromising with lots of things in life. There are social problems and so on… but what I strongly feel is one should try out there passions at least once in their life and there is no better time to do that than doing now…
My main reason to do this was, instead of regretting at a later point that I could have worked out my passion, its better to try now and see the result. There will not be no regrets irrespective of the outcome.
But I do agree that it depends on so many factors like family, society, financial status and so on….
