Bollywood on Joost

June 4, 2007 · Posted in India Web 2.0

Joost is a P2P based online television service started by the founders of Kazaa and Skype - Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom. Just like they disrupted the traditional music and the phone markets, they intend to disrupt the television market by Joost. I’ve tried out Joost myself and was very impressed with the service. Once the few initial hiccups are sorted out and new content providers are signed up, it may so happen that down the line, one may very well no longer be necessitated to own a TV.

As part of ramping up the content, Joost has signed a deal with Saavn to get access to its library of Bollywood and other South Asian film, music, TV and sports programs. Joost users will now be able to watch Bollywood movies and songs and satisfy their craving for desi content. Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, executive vice president, content strategy and acquisition, said, “There is a growing appetite for Bollywood films and music around the world, but until now, there hasn’t been widespread access to great Bollywood programming.”

Rest of story in ET.

Never heard of Savan before. Any idea what are they trying to achieve? All I see is music videos and user profiles.
