Chakpak, Bollywood goes Web 2.0
Cricket and Bollywood are the two biggest obsessions for Indians. In lieu of the recently concluded World Cup, several Web 2.0ish startups launched hoping to rope in the cricket crazy fans. As far as Bollywood is concerned, Web2.0 still remained an alien concept. Chakpak, a Web 2.0 startup, hopes to change that. Chakpak is by far the best and the only attempt I’ve seen at applying Web 2.0 concepts to Bollywood. Chakpak is a niche social networking site focussed on Bollywood. Consider Flixster gone Bollywood.
When you sign up for the service, you have the option to fill in information about your favorite movies, actors etc. You can also invite friends and contacts from your Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, Rediffmail and Indiatimes address books. At the core of the site are movie profiles. Each movie profile has a related synopsis, reviews, photos, videos, cast, discussions and ratings. The actors and cast for a movie are cross linked with their own profile page. The profile page for each actor has detailed info and media including bio, photos, videos, news, filmography, comments and fan clubs. A user can add movies, photos, actors and other media to their favorites list and can also create other custom lists like ‘want to watch’ list, ‘wait for DVD release’ list, ’80s comedy movies’ list etc.
The social networking features of the site also come in handy. You can add new friends and view all the movies, photos they have bookmarked. Essentially, a neat way of discovering new movies, which have been favorited by other users with similar preferences. You can also view all activity - comments, ratings, discussions etc. - of other users. Besides this, the site also has features like ‘top rated movies’, ‘new releases’, ‘upcoming movies’ etc. The site also has a comprehensive News section and a section for celebrity wallpapers.
All the content on the site is primarily user generated. The site makes great use of AJAX and other Web 2.0 features like tagging, direct URL linking etc. Widgets are also provided that bloggers can use to put up on their blogs. At first glance, Chakpak appears a bit chaotic. On closer inspection, you’ll find that the comprehensive feature set revolving around Bollywood gives the site a lot of structure and a sense of completeness. To put it simply, a one-stop shop for Bollywood buffs.
I love the site and the effort that the founders have put into the site. They seem to have hit the sweet spot when it comes to concept and implementation.

Chakpak has been one of the success in the indian internet industry. Another site which I think has great potential is http://saleraja.com. It is related to shopping and SALEs going on in Delhi and Bangalore.
They are also rumoured to be bringing an orkut application soon… like chakpak
