SaReGaMa introduces music downloads for Rs 12

SaReGaMa, one of the largest Indian music portals, plans to launch a new service from the end of this month. The portal plans to offer music downloads to users. They will have about 5 lakh music tracks available for downloads. While a pricing strategy is yet to be finalized, Subroto Chattopadhyay, MD SaReGaMA, says Rs 12/- seems to be a likely price for downloading each song.

This will definitely shake things up in the Hindi - Indian music download market. Pretty BIG news.

The story however, fails to mention if the songs will have DRM or will be DRM-free. Piracy still remains a major barrier for effectively monetizing Indian music downloads.
