IndianTVSchedule.com - Listings for Indian TV

April 25, 2007 · Posted in India Web 2.0, reviews

The number of Indian TV channels is skyrocketing. Emergence of DTH and IPTV provides customers with a pleothra of TV channels to choose from. But all this adds chaos and dilemma to the consumer - what to watch, what not to watch. Its difficult to keep track of TV programs you may find interesting.

Well, IndianTVSchedule hopes to make your lives a little easier.

IndianTVSchedule is a feature rich, AJAX based, TV listings guide for Indian television. The site provides a tabular view of all the TV channels - the channels form the rows while the time slots make up the columns. You can filter the listings by the time frame you are interested in. So, for instance, if you are interested in finding out whats on TV during prime time, just select primetime from the dropdown list and the the listings will gently slide onto the selected time window - ohh and with a touch of AJAX. You can also view the channel listings for other days of the week. Another powerful filter is the option to limit listings by the channel genre. Select ‘Sports’ and only the listings for sports channels will be displayed.

More personalized features are enabled when you sign up for the service. Sign up is as simple as providing an email address and your password. Once you’ve registered for the service, you can set up a customized list of your favorite channels. Later, while viewing the TV listings, you can choose the option to limit the listings by your favorites only. Additionally, you can also set reminders for the TV shows you are interested in. I believe the site will send you email reminders about the TV show. I tried to set a couple of reminders but did not get any email reminders. Probably, its a bug - considering that the site is still beta.

IndianTVSchedule also goes a step further and provides some cool mashup features related to movies aired on television. Click on a movie listing and you are presented with a synopsis, movie rating and a trailer (from YouTube).

The site makes great use of AJAX and usability is top-notch. In terms of features and UI, the site adheres to the ‘Keep It Simple, Stupid’ principle. Several other features can be added to increase the interactivity, UGC - but I’m pretty sure they must be in the works. IndianTVSchedule addresses a growing need in the Indian market - and does a great job at it.
The site is founded by Vikas Patial - a 23 year old software consultant from Delhi who blogs here.

Go ahead, check it out. I’m pretty sure you’ll come away impressed.

    Vikas,

I’m just thinking out loud here - but probably you can have forums where people can discuss about TV shows. similarly, if you can generate top-5 lists - example: the top 5 shows people are interested in (judged based on number of reminders set for a show).Probably have ‘email to friend’ - say i notice a show that a friend of mine may be interested in - i can email info about the tv show listing to him directly..

Again, just doing some rapid brainstorming - you dissect and decide.

Btw, you may want to check the reminder email feature - i set a cpl of reminders but did not get the email.

    Great job though !!
