GPRS statistics for India - 21 million GPRS users ?

February 11, 2007 · Posted in Mobile India

When the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) released their report on Mobile Value Added Services in December 2006, I was disappointed. I was expecting some more detailed statistics, especially related to GPRS / EDGE usage in India. The only mention of GPRS in the report is on page 31 in the following section:

Internet on mobile will become a more feasible option as leading players in the Internet content space especially configure their sites for access through mobiles; this would be further strengthened by the new trend of .mobi domain being set up. Thus GPRS usage should pick up significantly.

Yes, believe it or not - that’s the only reference to GPRS in the entire report. Ever since then, I’ve been trying to find statistics related to GPRS usage in India.

This article in The Hindu is the closest I’ve come to finding stats related to GPRS usage in India. Although not an official report, I’m pretty sure CricInfo did their homework considering that they take mobile VAS very seriously.

Although SMS still dominates the value-added services, its market is slowly saturating. But there is lot of potential for sophisticated applications. About 15 per cent of the mobile phone subscriber base in India (140 million users) is on the GPRS platform that enables such applications,” says Mr Nair.

15 % of 140 million is about 21 million GPRS users (as per the above quote, these 21 mil. are also active users of such apps).

Considering all the hype about mobile VAS, mobile TV etc. its significant to get additional statistics related to GPRS usage in India.

Would be interesting to understand this segment. Do you think its dominated by corporate users?

It would be very intresting to get some real figures. It’s one thing that people have a GPRS connection, it’s another thing if they are really using it for surfing the web.
