Me, my laptop and my wife
My wife often complains that my laptop is my first wife. I dont blame her. Here’s why - My daily schedule goes something like this - wake up, power up the baby, read news - blogs - emails, get ready, go to work, get home & power up my laptop again. Of a typical 17 - 18 hour day, I end up spending almost 90% of it in front of the laptop. TV has now become my secondary source of entertainment and information. Keep me away from the laptop for a day or two and I start getting uncomfortable. Signs of laptop-internet addiction ?
My time on the laptop is distributed across the following activities: reading - responding to emails, reading the latest news, blogs (stopping by comment on several of them), writing on this blog and finally working on my own startup effort. Of course, this does not include the time I spend on the laptop at work. Thanks to all the entrepreneurial and web2.0 buzz in US and India, there’s always something interesting to read out there. A new idea, a new perspective, a new product — the blogosphere just has so much to offer.
Earlier, my wife used to be under the impression that I come home and do office related work and thats what keeps me busy in the evenings. Once she found out that I catch up with blogosphere and news in the evenings too (which is timepass in her opinion), she was furious. I tried pacifying her and explained that I need to keep myself updated about all the blogosphere buzz and everything — it keeps me sharp etc. Hailing from a pharmacy background, she couldnt make sense of what I was saying and wanted an explanation in layman’s terms. No wonder, even though I tried my best, I did not do a good job at it . Finally, I told her that just like she spends time scrapping on Orkut, reading news and blogosphere buzz is my pastime.
The ill-effects of my love for my laptop dont end there. I have been a rabid tennis fan and player all my life. Thanks to my laptop and the net, tennis has taken a backseat. Social life has become secondary too.
A day may come soon that when I ask my wife for a birthday / valentine’s gift, she may respond with “a full day of quality time with me and no laptop or Internet”. I’m pretty sure a lot of you will resonate with my ramblings.
