   I don’t think that an Indian YouTube will work - the traction and momentum that YouTube has with their long-tail spinning out into the microcosm dwarfs these other sites (although I admire their efforts).

   I don’t think that an Indian YouTube will work - this may not be a right statement. India has the potential to be largest market for this kind of a service. With a tech Industry that employs a huge wok force, who have the access to high speed Internet and spare time at hand, it will be a little wonder if these kind of services don’t do good.

   But I do agree that such sites in India tend to attract all the wrong audience - people who want to share soft-porn, adult content etc but If you look at this new entrant to the market they have a very good monitoring system in place to report and remove obscene content. The service is AapkaVideo, any one who browse the site can report videos as offensive and this process does not require you to be a member of the site.

   Check it our for your self, they have a good selection of Indian videos and categorized for ease of navigation.

   Its none other than http://www.aapkavideo.com. Its a truely desi site and has a vast collection of videos and the best part is they are categorized under the heads “General”;”Entertainment”; “Comedy ” and so on… This helps a user to gain access to a particular video with minimum no: of clicks.This is a unigue feature of this site.

   Users can share multiple videos with their near n dear by just sharing the link via e mail.Even home videos can be shared on this site.There is an option to mark videos offensive too which would be reported and actioned immediately. This keeps the site clean and user friendly !!

   you got it right pranav,

   I have my own video sharing hub called KONKAN TV, and I have my share of users uploding porn too, which I constantly delete. Can we desi’s live without porn, or is porn a fixation for desis.?? Why cant we keep a site clean and family friendly, such that one need not need have to worry about whos looking over ones shouldder when visiting a website….

   KONKAN TV initially had the same codebase as videodubba, meravideo, apnatube etc. But it has evolved and is constantly evolving, as I’m trying to throw in as much techie stuff into it as I can. (working alone is not easy). But I believe I would get tehre soon…

   2 parts to a successfull site.
   1. the community
   2. the technology

   Well, a fair mix of both is required, but the more important aspect is the community itself. We,, I have also thrown across a concept of SOCIAL-INCOME. Do give it a read, and let me know your thoughts on it. It may catch up…. who knows, I hope it will, Every new idea needs tome for people to digest it… So time will tell I guess…

   Hi Rohan,

   I know about Konkan Tv after running into your posts on Amazon S3 forums - small world, eh ? I’ve always wondered about Indians and the obsession with sex / scandals related sites. Are we sex oppressed as a race ? Sex sells - I understand that…But the extent to which Indians are obsessed with such sites just baffles me. Why is it that there are a pleothra of such sites attracting amazing amounts of traffic from the Indian audience ?

   I reviewed your thoughts about social income — but I’m not sure I grasp the concept 100%. Isnt what your saying the same as revenue sharing that you tube announced it would start doing soon ? If it isnt the same, please help me understand what exactly you mean by social income.

   Also, a question for you — why have you limited the content domain to konkan / konkani ?

   watch this site which has very good collection of videos and i think it has highest number of videos in india. http://www.canaravideo.com is very fast, good and has lot of indian cultural videos. it looks like indian youtube try this out

   I think it is not right time for Indian ‘Youtube’. There isn’t much momentum due to lack of broadband. Mobile phones playing greater role in people’s life than PCs is yet another reason. Video content delivered through mobile would be a better option for startups right now.
