Angel Investor Ram Shriram says India lacks engineers with AJAX skills, middle managers
Ram Shriram, the angel investor, who made billions out of his angel funding in Google, has switched his attention to investment in Indian ventures. As part of that, he decries the shortage of middle managers and skilled (read web2.0, AJAX) developers in India.
At a recent private investment conference in San Francisco, Shriram acknowledges the problems that Google is having in hiring skilled employees at its India operations.
“I know first hand that we’ve had a bit more of a challenge trying to hire engineers for Google in Bangalore compared to other parts of the world,”
In particular, he talks about shortage skills realated to AJAX and web 2.0 design technology
“The people are smart, innately smart but don’t have this particular skill set yet,”
Quite a coincidence that the New York Times has an article addressing the same issues. As per the NYT article, only 1 of 4 graduates in India is employable — The rest are found lacking in technical skills, fluency in English, inability to work in a team environment or inability to deliver oral presentations. The above findings were the outcome of a survey commissioned by the National Association of Software and Service companies.
Nasscom forecasts a shortage of 500,000 skilled workers in the technology sector by 2010 — whew !!!
